Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A delightfully twisted comedy enacted by an outstanding ensemble cast, Nurse Betty gives winsome Renee Zellweger her best big-screen role to date. She's adorably ditzy as a small-town Kansas waitress who becomes delusional after witnessing her husband's murder and drives cross-country to Hollywood, where she imagines she can build a new life as a character in her favorite soap opera. Greg Kinnear plays the egotistical actor who believes Betty is an unusually dedicated actress and importunes his producer to give her a part, setting off an improbable but entertaining chain reaction of events. Director Neil LaBute (In the Company of Men) performs a delicate balancing act, offsetting the main storyline's disarming daffiness with a darker-toned subplot involving hit men Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock, whose pursuit of the witness becomes complicated by Freeman's apparent infatuation with her. Nurse Betty defies easy classification; it blends elements of road movies, Hollywood-themed satires, neo-noir thrillers, and Technicolored fairy tales. Think The Wizard of Oz directed by Quentin Tarantino, and you'll be on the right track.
All Movie Guide - Jason Clark
Director Neil LaBute blends genres in this intriguing but never quite successful entry -- it was his first film working from someone else's script -- that resembles a throwback to Joel and Ethan Coen's films of the 1980s, only without their supreme skill. On the plus side, however, Nurse Betty is one of the rare films that improves as it goes along, and the performances are mostly first-rate, especially those of Morgan Freeman, whose characterization is steady and sturdy, and the delightfully oblivious Renee Zellweger, a perfect choice for the lead role. A departure from his studies in verbal cruelty, LaBute fumbles a bit with the needlessly violent first reel (which involves an onscreen scalping that seemingly nobody will find appetizing), but finds his footing when the film settles into a charming and original romantic-comedy groove. An interesting film to say the least -- and one with definite cult appeal -- Nurse Betty was the only American film to take home a prize at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival -- for Best Screenplay.
Entertainment Weekly
The lines between reality and fantasy, goodness and violence, have rarely been so beautifully drawn as in this tangy dark comedy directed by Neil LaBute.
