Overview

This six-disc set contains all 22 episodes from the second season of the Emmy award-winning police drama NYPD Blue, a season best known for Jimmy Smits replacing David Caruso in one of the lead roles. Each episode is presented in its original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. English and Spanish soundtracks have been rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, while French soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a smattering of episode commentaries performed by various people involved in the show, including producers Mark Tinker and David Milch. Their insights are usually generally amusing and interesting. An hour-long documentary on the second season, a pair of featurettes (including one on the show's composer Mike Post), and some script-to-screen comparisons round out this solid release from 20th Century Fox that will please fans of the series and offers a perfect compliment to the first-season box set that was made available the same day.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
During its debut run, the hard-hitting cop show generated major controversy -- and multiple Emmy nominations -- with its explicit adult content. Season 2 grabbed headlines for a different kind of flap: Series star David Caruso got too big for his britches and demanded more money than producers were willing to pay. Instead, they wrote him out of the show; four episodes into the season, Det. John Kelly left the force in disgrace. (Caruso went on to tank in several movies before reviving his small-screen career in CSI: Miami). Enter Jimmy Smits, whose sensitive portrayal of Det. Bobby Simone won viewers' hearts from the get-go and gradually earned the respect of his new partner, the angst-ridden Det. Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz). Already a force to be reckoned with, Franz emerges this season as the glue that holds the series together, while Smits cements Bobby Simone as its most-loved character. (David who?) NYPD Blue's trademark collision of crime and passion culminates in the union of two very strange bedfellows when Sipowicz ties the knot with Assistant District Attorney Sylvia Costas (Sharon Lawrence). The couple's prenuptial jitters are examined in "Wedding Bell Blues," one of several short featurettes. There's also an hour-long documentary, "A Season of Change," in which the show's cast and creators revisit the Caruso controversy. Even after a decade, it's clear not all is forgiven.

NYPD Blue - Season 2 5 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 5 reviews.

I have been a fan of this show since episode 1. However, Jimmy Smits brought the grittiness and edge that was missing with David Caruso. Caruso's ''John Kelly'' character was too wimpy at times. Jimmy Smits ''Bobby Simone'' went after people with everything he had. The chemistry between Jimmy Smits and Dennis Franz was way better than Franz and Caruso. I can't wait for 9/18.

Good-bye Kelly and Hello Simone. This is without a doubt, the BEST season of this awesome series. Too bad they couldn't bring in Jimmy Smits in the first episode like Mark-Paul Gosselar replacing Rick Schroeder (three seasons true Blue fans don't acknowledge). Rick Schroeder? What was that all about? Smits and Franz is by far, the best buddy-cop match up ever seen on television. They had the chemistry that Franz and Caruso didn't have. Whether it was Bobby's problem dealing with Diane's drinking or Andy's personal demons, the characters cared for one another. Caruso was too much about himself. Smits never tried to steal the show. My favorite episode of season 2 (actually 2 episodes) are the ones where Simone tries to help his wife's friend with the troubled son. I've waited SO LONG for this title to be released on DVD. I can't wait to watch all these great episodes again.

This remains my favorite police series. With all of the other shows now catching up to past seasons, why no new seasons for NYPD Blue! I am wearing the two seasons that I have out, (if that were possible with DVD's.

This season of NYPD Blue is incredible, as are all the seasons with Jimmy Smits. It is easily the best time for the show, and we owe that to Bobby Simone. The character is so amazing, and Smits portrays him perfectly. Simone has to be one of my most favorite TV characters of all time. When you put the Simone/Sipowicz partnership up against the others, there's no comparison. John Kelly (Caruso) was great, but infamously short-lived. John Clark (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) was good, but it followed the Danny Sorenson (Schroder) disaster. For those three years, when I questioned why I was watching, I just thought of Smits and Bobby. This season introduces us to Bobby Simone, and that makes it just awesome.

Just an outstanding show filled with great actors and a great story line. I wish it were still on the air.
