Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
It's time for Rudolph to pass the torch! From The Simpsons-creator Matt Groening comes an instant holiday classic, a delightful animated adaptation of the book by J. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh. Drew Barrymore (who served as executive producer) heads the surprising voice cast as Olive, a Christmas-loving pooch who volunteers her services to Santa after Blitzen is injured. Why does Olive think she can be the chosen one? Because she heard on the radio that Santa would have to rely on "all of the other reindeer," which she hears as "Olive, the other reindeer." With the help of Martini, a resourceful penguin, and the kindness of strangers, she heads for the North Pole. Dan "Homer Simpson" Castellaneta is the voice of the naughty Christmas-hating postman who dogs Olive and schemes to stop Santa from making his rounds. R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe is Schnitzel, a flightless reindeer, and Tim Meadows cameos as bus driver Richard Stands. Like The Simpsons, Olive rewards viewers for paying attention, and stands up to repeated viewings. Even the songs -- especially "Merry Christmas, After All" -- are wonderful. Olive you need to see this fine holiday fare!

    A Favorite All Year Long

My daughter loves to watch Olive all year long, not just at Christmas. This is such a cute story about determination and believing in yourself just as much as it is about Christmas. Each character is so unique and there are some pretty funny moments, especially from the Penguin, that adults will get a chuckle out of.
