On the Town

( 6 )

Overview

Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly's New York musical On the Town comes to DVD with a standard full-frame 1.33:1 image (as any film produced before 1955 should). English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. Subtitles are accessible in both of these languages as well. Supplemental materials are limited to a theatrical trailer. Fans of movie-musicals will most certainly want to give this competent, if uninspired, disc a look.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Karen Backstein
"New York, New York, it's a wonderful town..." -- and this is a wonderful film. With exhilarating location shooting that captures the wonders of the city -- unheard of for a Hollywood musical in 1949 -- as well as memorable tunes and engaging performances by Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin, this tale of three sailors trying to make the most of 24 hours' leave in the Big Apple bursts with energy. Of course, each gob meets a gal who catches his eye, and romantic desires, dalliances, and delights fill this very special day. Based on a Broadway hit, the film was codirected by Kelly and Stanley Donen, the team that would bring us Singin' in the Rain. The rich choreographic inventions include the "Miss Subways" ballet and a joyful group number atop the Empire State Building. Winner of an Oscar for Best Score, On the Town is one of the jewels to come out of MGM in its heyday.
All Movie Guide - Richard Gilliam
On the Town was one of MGM's brightest films of the post-WWII era, symbolizing the optimistic view of the future that was widely held in the U.S. in 1949. Three sailors (Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Jules Munshin) have a 24-hour pass in which to see New York City. Fortunately, they also have a fine song score to take along with them, and some unusually fine choreography. As should be expected from an MGM production from this era, the tech credits are superb and the overall production design memorable. This is one of the best films produced by MGM's Arthur Freed unit, and it would probably be remembered as the single best musical of its era if it were not for Singin' in the Rain (1952).

    Entertaining:
This film is so great and will keep you singing and laughing all throughout. With great actors like Gene Kelly and
Frank Sinatra, how can you go wrong. They dance through the movie with Betty Garrett, Ann Miller and Vera-Ellen
and it's truly and must have!

    Musical Comedy.

Based in 1949, Navy sailors Gabey, Chip, and Ozzie have a 24-hour day pass to see and enjoy the sights of New York City as well as enjoy the company of pretty ladies. Gabey "falls" for "Miss Turnstile" and the fun begins. A high-speed car chase, dancing girls, and borough hopping are all part of this comedy put to music. What does the state of Indiana have to do with Ivy? Watch the DVD and find out. Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly are entertaining.
