The package includes a smattering of production note cards, but they relay no more information than the back of a video tape box. The transfer is poorly done, clearly from a used film print, and while the English audio is Dolby (not 5:1), the French track is mono only.

Milos Forman had proven his talent for astute social comedy in such earlier Czech films as Loves of a Blonde (1965) and The Firemen's Ball (1967), and his adept treatment of Cuckoo's Nest's metaphorically loaded conflict fulfilled the promise of an immigrant observer of American culture indicated in his first U.S. feature, Taking Off (1971). Shot on location at the Oregon State Hospital, and visually imprisoning the characters in tightly framed compositions, Haskell Wexler's and Bill Butler's cinematography underlines the psychological as well as physical confinement dogging the patients. The restrained, soft-spoken control of Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratched contrasts with the thoughtful vigor of Jack Nicholson's McMurphy, further emphasizing both the need to revolt and the difficulty in doing so posed by such consistent, quiet, internalized power. For a culture battered by the chaotic rebellions of the late 1960s/early 1970s, and the serial failures of institutional authority culminating in Watergate and the fall of Saigon, Cuckoo's Nest's resigned yet hopeful portrayal of spirited non-conformity touched a nerve, turning it into one of the most popular films of 1975. The independently produced film became only the second film in history to sweep all five top Academy Awards, winning Best Picture for producers Saul Zaentz and 31-year-old Michael Douglas, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay for Lawrence Hauben's and Bo Goldman's adaptation of the Kesey novel. Shrewdly combining roustabout fervor and humor with an acknowledgement of society's different limits, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest effectively communicated the disillusionment of the waning counter-culture even as it optimistically asserted that one rebel could make a difference.

    My first time watching this was in my Psychology class. All I can say is that it is now one of my favorite movies, if not my favorite. I highly recommend watching it. The characters were portrayed with such conviction and genuineness. To me, these characters were real. It's no wonder they won an Oscar. Milos Forman is a genius.

    Great Movie

    One of Jack's great movies along with all the other stars in it a very serious film dealing with mental illness and also our servicemen who also suffer some mental challenges. It brings some comedy and saddness to the screen, but hopefully the movie is enjoyed.

    Not much like the book.

    The movie starts out sort of the same as the book but as soon as it comes to the fishing trip, it takes a twist! Movie overall is excellent. If you read the book before watching the movie, you will be surprised of the overall quality.

    One Flew Should Continue Flying

    This is still one of my all-time favorite movies. Of course, Jack Nicholson can't be beat and what a great job Louise Fletcher did. Everyone should watch this movie. Beautifully done!!!

    i get now what the title means

    I kept hearing the name Nurse Ratchett and had no idea who is she and recognized louise fletcher as the always look pissed off grandmother from flowers in the attic. I saw this movie and thought wow that was a good movie and jack nicholson was excellent and gave a crazy yet cheery type performance. a favorite next to the joker with that creepy yet funny smile and of course the departed he was great in that too. this is about a guy and his presence at an aslyum. everyone did a good job and i thought what he did for the patients was weird yet nice at the same time. then when the ending came it was sad yet alright and i understood why the movie is called that and never heard of the book but i'm sure that was good too as the movie its based on. billy was one of my fave characters in the movie and surprised that it was a young brad douriff who is the voice of chucky and wormtongue in the lord of the rings film.

    great movie!

    Before I watched One Flew over the Cukoo's Nest I was a little bit worried that it wouldn't be as great as the book was. After I watched the movie I was blown away by how great this movie was and how well it portrayed the book. Cukoo's Nest has become one of my new favorites and, if you have read the book, you will not be disappointed by the movie.

    Excellent Movie

    This movie is such a good movie, where not only it has comedy but has everything. Jack Nicholson is such a excellent actor, i have never seen him act that way. he made me cry.i truly recommended

    the best movie ever!

    when i first saw this movie i thought it would be a boring movie then when i was watching it it was a very dramatic, and sad movie . but overall it was a great movie those out there that hasn't watched it yet go and get it1

    One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

    There are not enough stars to rate this film. It is a powerful film in which Jack Nicholson plays a man sent for evaluation at the state mental hospital. In a ton of events that show him trying to show the other boys in the hospital who to live life to the fullest, tragety strikes. This film means a lot to me since I have been in a mental ward of a hospital and I had a hard task watching it for the first time.
