Overview

Between the release of George waGGner's Operation Pacific (1951) and Nathan Juran's Hellcats Of The Navy (1957), May of 2003 is seeming like a celebration of World War II submarine dramas. WaGGner's movie is perhaps better known, because it starred John Wayne and a big chunk of the John Wayne/John Ford stock company, including Ward Bond and Jack Pennick. Coincidentally, Vice Admrial Charles Lockwood, commander of the United States Navy's submarine forces in the Pacific, was involved with both movies as technical advisor. The picture transfer on Operation Pacific is reasonably well done, balancing the need for sharpness and detail with at least an attempt at emulating the genuine darkness of a jungle island in the opening scene; the transfer is so sharp, that one can see a single fragment of a hair on the lens of the periscope that Ward Bond's submarine commander is looking through at 11 minutes in -- at least as impressive is the audio, which brings out the dark, haunting, string- and horn-dominated passages of Max Steiner's score, some of the better music generated by the composer during his final full decade of activity. Having seen this movie numerous times, between showings on American Movie Classics and the laserdisc release, this reviewer can safely say that the DVD is the best presentation that the movie has had in some 40 years, at least. Even in the disc's programming, the 30 chapters break down the 111 minute movie about as well as it ever will be delineated and outlined. The theatrical trailer is also present, along with subtitles in English, Spanish, French, Portugese, Japanese, Chinese, Bahasa, Thai, and Korean, accessible from a triple-layer menu that opens automatically on start-up. The trailer looks like the old laserdisc did, which is a shadow of how good the movie looks here -- surprisingly, the trailer takes nearly a minute to show John Wayne or Ward Bond on camera. There are also short partial filmographies of the three principal stars and director George waGGner.
