Overview

Orange County, the comedy that refers to itself as "not just a movie," but "a state of mind," arrives on a disc too full of commercials and too light on recognizing the comedic talents of it's impressive cast. It's presented in its original 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen format and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio with English and French language tracks. English subtitles are also included. Special Features are minimal and uninspired. Four judicious cuts can be found in the "Deleted Scenes" and director Jake Kasdan and ...

Other than that, the only other inclusion is a "Theatrical Trailer" and "15 Interstitials," short promos that are somewhat amusing, but too redundant to view all fifteen spots. With an extraordinary cast that includes comedians Jack Black, John Lithgow, Catherine O'HaraChevy Chase and Lily Tomlin, the exclusion of a gag reel is nothing short of criminal. Flat out--Paramount disappoints with this poorly packaged DVD.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
A wildly dysfunctional family is just one of the obstacles confronting a sensitive high school senior in the fast-paced teen comedy Orange County. Shaun Brumder Colin Hanks is a college-bound aspiring writer whose plans to attend Stanford and escape his uninspiring upper-middle-class surroundings are derailed when his school counselor sends in the wrong transcript. Shaun's drunken mother Catherine O'Hara and stoned brother Jack Black complicate his desperate attempts to rectify the mistake, while his workaholic father John Lithgow provides scant moral support. Orange County arrives with an interesting pedigree: Colin Hanks is the Tom Hanks's son; co-star Schuyler Fisk Shaun's girlfriend is Sissy Spacek's daughter; director Jake Kasdan Zero Effect is the son of writer-director Lawrence Kasdan. These tinseltown links translate into a plethora of strong cameo roles, including bits from Chevy Chase, Ben Stiller, Lily Tomlin, and Harold Ramis. The film has loads of light-hearted humor and the plot moves along at a satisfyingly brisk clip. And while leads Hanks and Fisk remain coolly tranquil amid the chaos, it's the supporting cast that distinguishes Orange County. O'Hara, Black, and Lithgow deliver demented charm that keeps their scenes working, and the whole affair is crowned by Kevin Kline's engagingly dead-pan performance as the author Brumder idolizes. Ultimately, there is a lot of typical teen humor in Orange County. Yet, despite the sex, drugs, and rock and roll, it comes with a PG-13 rating. Expect nothing more or less than some good clean fun.
All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
Director Jake Kasdan's shaggy, haphazard teen comedy scores points for its likable (if miscast) leads and some inspired comic situations, but it's hard to think of the film as anything more than a missed opportunity. Orange County's scant 81-minute running time may provide some clues as to why: The best jokes in Mike White's mildly subversive script were most likely left on the cutting-room floor to avoid an "R" rating. What's left is a hodgepodge of gags about sex, substance abuse, and class privilege, some of which are spot-on in lampooning Southern Californian affluence, while others feel half-baked and perfunctory. Kasdan shoves the film along at a sprightly pace, but the economy comes at a price: The quick cutting and frequent close-ups rob County of its atmosphere and style, and most every role feels like an extended cameo. Even the inspired supporting work by Jack Black, Kevin Kline, and Catharine O'Hara fails to make an impression. On the plus side, the film's wall-to-wall pop
ock soundtrack -- a prerequisite for an MTV Films release -- makes room for some unexpected pleasures, including several sun-kissed Brian Wilson tracks and even a running parody of Crazy Town's corny hit single, "Butterfly."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers
A deft script by Mike White ... elevates the usual teen twaddle by grounding the laughs in feeling.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert

One of those movies like Ghost World and Legally Blonde where the description can't do justice to the experience.

A deft script by Mike White ... elevates the usual teen twaddle by grounding the laughs in feeling.

    funny and intelligent

Orange County is a good comedy with a surprising level of depth. Mostly it is funny but the underlying theme is worthwhile too and I hate the Chicago Sun-Times for comparing anything to Legally Blonde!
