Overview

Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas star in the erotic drama Original Sin. Sporting a clean 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen image, this transfer by MGM looks very good without any noticeable imperfections present. Featuring bright colors and solid black levels, this is an excellent image with striking clarity. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. This is a very enveloping soundtrack that features multiple directional effects and extremely clear dialogue, music, and effects. Also included on this disc are subtitles in Spanish, French, Portuguese, and English. The extra features on this "unrated" edition of Original Sin include a somewhat interesting commentary track by director Michael Cristofer (who tends to drone on a bit too much), a music video for the song "You Can't Walk Away From Love" by singer Gloria Estefan, an animated photo gallery of images from the film, and an original theatrical trailer for Original Sin.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Sultry Angelina Jolie and hot-blooded Antonio Banderas steam up the screen with their passionate sex scenes in this lurid melodrama, which combines the thematic elements of film noir with those of bodice-ripping period romance novels. Based on Cornell Woolrich’s thriller Waltz into Darkness (previously filmed as Mississippi Mermaid, with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Catherine Deneuve in the leads), Original Sin takes place in the late 19th century, where Cuban-born plantation owner Luis Durand (Banderas) awaits the arrival of his mail-order bride. Instead of the rather plain-looking woman pictured in the faded photograph she sent him, Julia Russell (Jolie) turns out to be an alluring beauty whose charms are as irresistible as her past is mysterious. The convoluted story, adapted by writer-director Michael Cristofer (Body Shots), unfolds in a decadent tropical milieu and has a surfeit of overwrought dialogue and serpentine plot twists. But Original Sin is sensually enthralling fare of the "guilty pleasure" variety, and it deserves a spot on your shelf if only for the torrid scenes shared by Jolie and Banderas. Cristofer provides a commentary for the DVD, which also sports an elaborate music video (performed by Gloria Estefan) and an animated photo gallery
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert

It's an exuberant example of what it is--a bodice-ripping murder "meller"...

With award wining stars ''Angelina Jolie'', and ''Antonio Banderis'', the film managed to create a stir among viewers. The stir however, involves mixed feelings. While some audiences found it to be romantic and spellbounding, the film wasn't able to reach the depth of its intentions or rise to the expectation of the book it is based upon, ''waltz into darkness''. After seeing the movie twice, I cannot help but feel that there were some important factors missing. I will be looking forward to reading the book. The filmmaker may have had an underlining tone that just wasn't conveyed strongly enough unlike his movie ''Gia,'' which was great. Maybe next time, he'll waltz his vision out of the darkness.

Attractive couple but movie becomes predictable. Antonio as usual is as passionate as ever.

I think Angelina Jolie is the most beautiful woman in the world, and was perfect for this part in the movie. She has this sexiness, yet mysterious look, perfect for the Julia Russell role in this movie. Banderas was also very good for this role, playing the innocent and helpless man Luis Vargas. I also suggest the soundtrack to this movie; the book is just as amazing. Whether you get the un-rated version or not, the movie is just the same. There is just more nudity. I love the movie, the soundtrack, the book, and of course Angelina Jolie!

Basically, you don't get to see the best of Jolie. Other than that, it's a good flick

this is a movie about someone's conscionce and trying to figure out what's the best thing to do in UR life. it's about making the worst of choices for the one U luv and living w/ it. Angelina plays a woman that's a mail order wife basically and marries the hottie Antonio Banderas but the thing is she usually does this most of the time to milk the husbands for their worth and then run off w/ her accomplice but she falls for our Antonio and decides to run like she had planned. fate catches up to her and leaves u w/ a surprise ending that makes u wonder if the old saying, if it's meant to be it's meant to be, is really as true as this movie makes it be. anythings possible. especially in this movie. LOVED IT!

This movie tells the tale of romance, deception, murder, love and desperation as two individuals fall in love only to be scared and foiled. When Luis Vargas sends away to America for a wife, the last thing he expects is a apparently stunning, loyal and wonderful wife. However, soon into the marriage, he determines that his wife is not only who he thought she was but has a dangerous past. As they attempt to run from the danger, they must face death, deceit, love, depression and desperation. Will they make it, or will the forces striving to keep them apart succeed. This story of love, passion, deceit and death brought to you by Antonia Banderas and Angelina Jolie is powerful, sexy and emotionally exciting.
