Osbournes: First Season

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
The Osbournes began with a brilliant idea: Reinvent the family sitcom as reality TV cross-bred with This Is Spinal Tap. But not even MTV expected it to be an overnight sensation, despite (or perhaps because of) all those bleeps. As "The Dad," bat-chomping Ozzy Osbourne won viewers' hearts from the get-go, enduring Everyman struggles with tricky remotes, sex-crazed pets, and his recalcitrant teens, Jack and Kelly.
Even his rock-star problems played out like domestic disputes, such as when his wife suggested he tour with a bubble machine: "C'mon, Sharon, I'm the Prince of @#%$!# Darkness!" By the time Season 2 rolled around, The Osbournes had become such an institution that Ozzy and Sharon dined at the White House. They'd also been hit by the reality of Sharon's colon cancer. This two-DVD set includes all 10 shows from the debut season (plus four bonus episodes) and takes you back to the age of innocence when the biggest issue the clan faced was how to get rid of Jack's smelly skateboard buddy Dill. It's also an Ozzy-appropriate orgy of extra features. One can "match the doggie to the dookie," decode the master's mutters with the "Ozzy Translator," and use set-top features to edit scenes, for openers. And though Season One itself often played like one big blooper, it turns out that what aired was just the tip of the iceberg. You ain't seen nothin' till you've seen this disc's "Too Oz for TV" reel.

Easily thrown away as Trash Television...

It's easy to say this is trash television, but at closer look, you can see not only a contemporary family with an extraordinary life, but relationships between parents and children that really haven't been as fascinatingly explored before. Also, with the profanity it allows you to actually listen to what their saying instead of being taken out by a beep every 5 seconds. Well directed, and one of the best editing jobs on TV, The Osbournes- as many MTV properties- provides a lot more fodder for thought than their audience requires.
