Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Created by award-winning children's author and illustrator Dan Yaccarino, Oswald is a gentle and sublimely off-center preschool series, one of Nickelodeon's best and brightest. This eight-story DVD features Oswald, a cheerful, friendly blue octopus (ingratiatingly voiced by Fred Savage) who lives with his frankfurter-shaped dog, Weenie, in Big City, the accommodating home for an array of charmingly offbeat characters. In "Daisy and the Duckling," Oswald and his flower friend Daisy are "quacking up a storm" to reunite a lost duckling with his mother. Next, in "The Double Date," Oswald pulls a Marcia Brady by accidentally making simultaneous plans with Daisy and his penguin friend Henry (voiced to fussy perfection by David "Squiggy" Landers). In "Chasing the Ice Cream Truck," Oswald and Weenie follow the sound of tinkling bells to Johnny Snowman's ice cream truck. Next, in "The Camping Trip," a rainstorm can't dampen Oswald's plans to camp with his friends. "Henry Needs a Haircut" is a cut above, as nervous Henry tries to avoid going to the barber. Too much food makes "Flippy the Fish" outgrow her bowl. Next, Oswald and Daisy get into "A Sticky Situation" when they make Super-Sticky Honey Buns. The final treat is "Tutti-Frutti Pie," in which helpful Oswald is sidetracked from his fruit-picking expedition. Adding immeasurably to this series' serenely strange appeal is Evan Lurie's oddly catchy music and whimsical ditties. A four-story VHS edition is also available.
