Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Award-winning children's author and illustrator Dan Yaccarino created this off-center addition to Nickelodeon's stable of preschool franchises. Oswald (voiced by Fred Savage) is a cheerful, piano-playing blue octopus who lives with his frankfurter-shaped dog, Weenie, in Big City, the accommodating home to an array of wackyland characters, including Henry, a fussy penguin (David "Squiggy" Lander), Madame Butterfly (Larraine Newman), a snowman ice cream purveyor, and Daisy, a flower. Oswald makes its welcome DVD debut with this collection of eight stories that reinforce friendships and celebrate the quirks of Oswald and friends. In "A Day at the Beach," Henry refuses to get wet until he must rescue a stranded Daisy. In "The Sand Sculpture Contest," judge Oswald must choose between his friends' creations. Next, Oswald tries to accommodate the snails munching on his red, ripe, juicy tomatoes in "The Tomato Garden." In "Bird Watching," excitable Daisy can't sit still long enough to birdwatch with Oswald. In "Odd One Out," Oswald feels left out when Henry seems to have more in common with his visiting cousin, Louie (Lander's former Laverne & Shirley costar Michael McKean). Next, a change of heart keeps Henry from leaving Big City and his friends in "Goodbye Best Friend." In "Friends Indeed," Henry and Daisy are forced to patch up their argument to help their mutual friend Oswald. In "Sammy Starship Live," Oswald gets his wish to play piano for his favorite singing star (a swingin' Tony Orlando). Evan Lurie, of the Lounge Lizards, composed the oddly catchy music and whimsical ditties. In its own gentle and whimsical way, Oswald is just distinctively different enough to attract adult fans.
