Overview

This star-studded production of Verdi's Otello has been given a quality release on DVD. Otello has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The opera is performed in Italian, as written, and the disc includes optional English-language subtitles; the audio is in Dolby Digital Stereo. While the disc features no additional bonus material, the improved audio and visual quality of the presentation (as well as easy access to individual passages) will doubtless make this a welcome addition to the libraries of opera buffs.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Patrick Giles
Through the closing years of the 20th century, Plácido Domingo was the leading exponent of the title role of Verdi's penultimate opera. It is one of the most challenging roles to sing, demanding a dramatic and vocal power few tenors can manage comfortably, and listeners were understandably nervous when Domingo began appearing in the role in the 1970s. But, as this exciting 1992 performance from the Royal Opera House demonstrates, the years of work he put into this role gave Domingo's Otello a thrilling authority. Opera singers sometimes look jarringly strange in close-up; it takes a lot of muscle and lung power to produce those big sounds. But Domingo is so immersed in the tragic machinations of his role that his performance benefits from the camera's close scrutiny. Sergei Leifkerus (Iago) is at his best in his moments with Domingo: The tension between the two characters is extraordinary, and their vocal sparring rivets the viewer's attention. The Desdemona is Kiri Te Kanawa, famous for her peerlessly crystalline soprano and beautiful appearance. On this occasion she also shows enthralling dramatic ability, thanks to conductor Sir Georg Solti, who leads a powerfully driven reading of this magnificent work.
