Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
As HBO's first dramatic series, Oz truly blazed a creative trail in 1997 for every show that came after it on the network. Creator Tom Fontana Homicide: Life on the Street had absolute freedom to tell the stories of the inmates in the Oswald State Correctional Facility the way he wanted to, complete with violence, nudity, and prison-grade language. Viewers can finally complete their Oz DVD collection with Season 6’s eight-episode run. Wrapping up years of story lines is no easy task, so Season 6 suffers a bit from scattered and overloaded plot arcs. But those of us focused on the fate of our favorite inmates can overlook the weak points. Inmate Augustus Hill Harold Perrineau Jr., the series’ one-man Greek chorus, returns in ghost form in Season 6 after getting shanked at the close of Season 5. Miguel Alvarez Kirk Acevedo continues on his slow path to destruction, eventually giving up hope of parole and consoling himself in the arms of new inmate Alonzo Torquemada Bobby Cannavale. Ryan O'Reily Dean Winters loses his fight to get his brother Cyril Scott William Winters off death row, leading to the heartbreaking "A Day in the Death" -- the commentary on which shouldn't be missed. The Shakespearian enmity between Vern Schillinger J. K. Simmons and Tobias Beecher Lee Tergesen comes to a spectacular end during the play Macbeth, enacted by Emerald City's inmates. And finally, the long-running love story between Beecher and fellow inmate Chris Keller Christopher Meloni concludes with a treacherous phone call, a lingering kiss, and the most shocking kiss-off in TV history.

Save your time if you're a fan

This show should have ended after season 5. No new ground is covered in this season. It plays out like a rushed together wrap up session where the producers decided to close the book on far too many characters. There are about 3 seasons' worth of storylines in this season, but unfortunately they are all given the same brief treatment, and none are developed very far. In short, there are answers given just to give answers. I would have preferred to wonder what those answers were.
