Partridge Family: Complete Second Season

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
The beat goes on for The Partridge Family in its second season, even if -- after "I Woke Up in Love This Morning" in the season-opener -- the lip-syncing family's greatest hits are behind them. Still, the ensemble of Shirley Jones, her real-life son David Cassidy, future L.A. Law litigator Susan Dey, once-and-future brat Danny Bonaduce, and cutey pie Suzanne Crough continue to make beautiful music together. This season, Brian ...

This season, Brian Forster replaces Jeremy Gelbanks in the role of young Christopher Partridge, but the main character development is Bonaduce's evolution into the role of family hustler, Danny. In "I Am Curious Partridge," he tries to generate publicity for the band by writing scandalous stories about his mother and teen idol brother, Keith (Cassidy), in the local Sunday newspaper. In "Promise Her Anything, But Give Her a Punch," Danny is in the throes of his first crush -- who in turn has a crush on Keith. In "Anatomy of a Tonsil," he is convinced his upcoming operation will be the death of him. Hipper than its Friday night ABC companion The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family acknowledged social concerns of the day, including the plight of whales in "Whatever Happened to Moby Dick?" and Native-Americans in "All's Fair in Love and Fairs". Lending formidable back-up this season are: a pre-All in the Family Rob Reiner as a biker who dates Laurie in "A Man Called Snake"; Howard Cossell as himself in "Moby Dick"; Dean Jagger as the sole resident of a ghost town in the moving Christmas episode, "Don't Bring Your Guns to Town, Santa"; a pre-Bridget Loves Bernie" Meredith Baxter in "Where Do Mermaids Go?," portraying a wealthy free spirit who gives the Partridges a million dollars; and John "Sgt. Schultz" Banner as a former show business psychic in "Who is Max Ledbetter and Why is He Saying All Those Horrible Things?" Not to strike a sour note, but the lack of any cast commentary is a bummer. Yet, this encore to the First Season set offers plenty of reasons for Partridge fans to "Come On, Get Happy."

One of the best series in the 70s

I originally was not sure if I wanted to get the DVD as well as season 1 but I'm glad I did. It brings back so many great memories of watching this show as a kid. Harry Morgan (Col. Potter of MASH) shows up a second time on this series as half of the couple trying to get the Partridges to perform at the fair. He was in an episode on Season 1 as a man who claims injuries in a fender bender with the Partridges. I got a kick out of the fact that 2 Charlies Angels appeared on the show in the first 2 seasons: Farrah Fawcett as a helpful beautiful stranger in the first season on the first episode Harry Morgan appeared in. Jaclyn Smith as the niece of a romantic interest for Shirley. The music is still great!
