Among the many celebrities with pet causes, Sir Paul McCartney's championing of animal rights is among the more enduring star-charity connections on record or, in this case, DVD and VHS. And while McCartney's Friends -- made for this People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals benefit gala, recorded in September 2000 -- would seem to be of the showbiz air-kiss variety, it in no way detracts from either the cause or the performances, which are a real treat. McCartney headlines the event, backed on guitar by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, with Sarah McLachlan, the B-52's, and the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde all turning in heartfelt contributions. Other Friends on parade here include Pamela Anderson whose PETA work is awarded at the event, Gillian Anderson, Alec Baldwin, Margaret Cho, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ellen DeGeneres, Andy Dick, Anne Heche, Ricki Lake, Bill Maher, Brian McKnight, and Alicia Silverstone. As for the music itself, McCartney's scorching set leans on the roots rock that first inspired him: His poignant take on Ricky Nelson's "Lonesome Town" nods ever so slightly to his late wife, Linda, whose devotion to PETA's efforts are duly saluted through the evening. Tracks are as follows:- Angel Sarah McLachlan
