Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Pete Segall
The Peanuts holiday specials -- It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving-- were some of the most beloved prime-time specials on television for more than 25 years, bringing the exploits of the loveable blockhead Charlie Brown, his adventureous beagle Snoopy, and the rest of their friends into homes across the country. CBS stopped broadcasting them several years ago, but now all of them have been restored and rereleased on DVD. In Great Pumpkin, it's Halloween, and everyone dresses up to go trick-or-treating. Charlie Brown puts on a bed-sheet and declares himself a ghost, and winds up collecting a bag full of rocks. The only person who doesn't go trick-or-treating is Linus, who, hoping to prove that the Great Pumpkin really does exist, sits alone in a pumpkin patch all night, awaiting the mythical pumpkin's arrival. Snoopy, meanwhile, boards his trademark Sopwith Camel to fight the nefarious Red Baron, only to be shot down. Linus's singular faith in the Great Pumpkin is at the heart of the show, reminding us that no matter the occasion, there are stronger feelings in this world than the want for candy. The restored DVD includes the equally autumnal, You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown. A Charlie Brown Christmas introduced Charles M. Schulz's timeless gang to the world of television and was awarded both an Emmy and a Peabody award. Charlie agrees to direct the school Christmas pageant and in the process tries to discover the true meaning of the holiday. Although its animation is dated and its evangelism is unsubtle, A Charlie Brown Christmas is so good-hearted that it's very easy to overlook its flaws. Linus wrapping his blanket around the tiny, stunted tree remains among the most endearing images ever produced for network television. For grown-ups, this is how Charlie Brown and Snoopy and Sally will always be remembered, dancing around the school stage in a childish torrent of goodwill. For kids, the simple charm of the white beagle with black ears will likely beguile them from here to next Tuesday. The new DVD is unedited and includes the recent special, It's Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, Peppermint Patty invites herself -- and friends -- to Charlie Brown's for Thanksgiving dinner, "Chuck," along with the ever-resourceful Snoopy and Woodstock, tries to put together his own feast. Charlie Brown's characteristic neuroses and fear of failure are on vibrant display here, but Snoopy lightens the mood admirably in this special, first seen in 1973.
