Peanuts: I Want A Dog For Christmas Charlie Brown

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown is something of a mixed blessing. It's always a pleasure to be reunited with good ol' Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang, especially at Christmastime, when the strains of the "Linus and Lucy" theme can prove irresistible. But this 2003 television special fails to capture the spirit that made A Charlie Brown Christmas an instant classic and holiday perennial. The late Charles Schulz's ...

The late Charles Schulz's guiding hand is sorely missed, particularly in an ill-advised subplot in which Rerun, Linus and Lucy's baby brother, jokes to a female classmate about running away to Paris and is suspended from school for harassment! More in keeping with Schulz's gentle humor and intimately observed child's-eye view of the world are vignettes that deal with Rerun's odd-boy-out sibling relations and his ruminations from the travel seat of his mother's bicycle. Meanwhile, Rerun pesters his mother for a dog and asks for Snoopy to come out and play with him. Faithful readers of Peanuts will get a nostalgic kick out of one classic Schulz gag: Rerun (Linus in the original strip) panics during his school Christmas pageant. He has forgotten his lines. A well-timed threat from Lucy jogs his memory. To quote A Charlie Brown Christmas, perhaps this isn't such a bad little special after all. Maybe all it needs is a little love.
