At the time of its release, this lavish period war drama from hyperkinetic director Michael Bay became the most expensive motion picture ever green-lighted by a studio. Ben Affleck stars as Rafe McCawley, a military pilot stationed under Jimmy Doolittle (Alec Baldwin) in New Jersey, along with his best friend from childhood, Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett). Rafe is chomping at the bit to get involved in World War II, but America has not entered the conflict, so he is forced to fight on loan to the Royal Air Force in Britain, leaving behind his beautiful girlfriend Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale). After Rafe goes overseas, both Danny and Evelyn are transferred to the naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where word arrives that Rafe has been killed in action. A grief-stricken Evelyn and Danny become romantically attached, a situation that becomes a lit powder keg when Rafe suddenly reappears, having survived his ordeal in the European war. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor puts the romantic triangle on hold, as the best friends are ordered to undertake a top-secret and highly dangerous retaliatory mission to bomb Tokyo, once again under the command of Doolittle. Although the trio of leads are entirely fictional, Cuba Gooding Jr., Tom Sizemore, and Jon Voight (as FDR) co-star in the roles of real-life historical figures. Pearl Harbor is based on a script by Randall Wallace, writer of Braveheart (1995) and The Man in the Iron Mask (1998). Taking a page from the production history of James Cameron's Titanic (1997), many of the actors and filmmakers involved with Pearl Harbor deferred their usual salaries until the film "broke even" at the box office.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kryssa Schemmerling
As oversized and sleek as a vintage Cadillac, this sprawling World War II epic directed by action-specialist Michael Bay is an old-fashioned melodrama retrofitted with all the high-tech special effects money can buy -- think Saving Private Ryan crossed with Titanic. Bay and producer Jerry Bruckheimer always dish out disaster and mayhem with style, but in Pearl Harbor they also add a healthy helping of romance. The story, which unfolds in Hawaii as Japan prepares for its fateful attack on the American fleet, follows two young farm boys turned ace fighter pilots (Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett), who find their lifelong friendship challenged when they both fall in love with the same beautiful young nurse (Kate Beckinsale). The characters -- unfailingly earnest, sentimental, patriotic, and heroic -- are a deliberate throwback to an earlier, less complicated era of American moviemaking. "We may lose this battle, but we’re gonna win this war," says Alec Baldwin, portraying the famed airman Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle with definitive bombast. "You know why?" he asks, pointing to Affleck and Hartnett. "Because of them." Pearl Harbor is that kind of picture; and one with plenty of retro Hollywood glamour on display, too. The three stars -- Beckinsale, with her ruby-red lips and Veronica Lake hairdo; the young men, all broad shoulders and rippling muscles -- never look anything less than gorgeous, whether dodging bombs or posing in period bathing suits against surging surf. The high point of the film, of course, is the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, and here Bay truly excels. State-of-the-art cinematography and effects make for a thrilling and harrowing extended sequence that plays like a mini disaster movie. It brings the horror of America’s first "Day of Infamy" vividly to life. Viewed in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States, Pearl Harbor, for all its gloss, resonates and moves in ways that Bay and Bruckheimer probably never could have imagined when they made it.

Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the entire cast and crew have given us a Pearl Harbor to remember. Kevin Thomas

This movie was very interseting. I loved it. I'm going to go watch it again. It's a must see for Josh Hartnett and Ben Affleck fans. For those of you who watch movies for the action in it, then this probably isn't for you. Ben Affleck plays ''Rafe'' who gets a girlfriend and then things get mixed up between him and his best friend Danny (played by Josh Hartnett). I don't want to give the story away. Go watch it to see what you think.

I LOVED this movie. I have a fascination with the culture of the 1940s. It was a different time and so seeing something like this was a great experience for me.

This is one of the few movies that I looked foward to watching. Just seeing the previews made me want to see this movie. Pearl Harbor ended up being one of my favorite movies. The plot of the movie before even seeing it had caught my attention. I was glad that I went to see this movie, it was not only an emotional movie, but it also had action. The characters in the movie were all played by great actors that really captured the personality of character. The main actors were Josh Harnett and Ben Affleck. I think the main reason I loved this movie so much, was the fact that the story was partly true and fictional. This is one movie I can't wait to come out on video. So if your looking for something to rent, and you see Pearl Harbor that would be my best choice.

This movie, while being fun and sweet, really does portray what it might have been like in the real day. I believe the love, war, and death really brought out the actors ability to play roles that would be very hard to play. They (Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Kate Beckinsale, Alec Baldwin, James King, Cuba Gooding Jr., Tom Sizemore...) all did an excellent job. Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckhimer made another outstanding movie! SEE THIS MOVIE, and fall in love with it just like I did!

Dont listen to the critics, Peal Harbor is a good film. It dosent deserve to be treated with no stars. It is a tragedy that has happend and was created in the Big Screen. Ben Afflek & Josh Harneets Triangle love with the beautiful Kate Beckinsale might get a little annoying and steal your time (one hour)While the love triagle is there the Jappense are planing to attack Pearl Harbor, The film gets relly strong at the end wich raises pure quality drama. And the vissual effects are spectacular. A movie that has Passion, & Pride. The whole cast does good. But the real star here is Cuba Godding Jr, and Josh Harnett preformances wich steal the screen. Do yourself a favor and dont listen to the critics take my opinion Pearl Harbor is good.

There is not a word that exists that describes how much I enjoyed this film! I am not easily entertained by movies anymore they really have to strike something within me for me to like a movie and I loved this one! When I went to see it I hadn't seen any of the promotions and I saw maybe one or two previews and an interview with Ben Affleck. When I saw it I was amazed! This movie captured everything I love about movies. There was great character devlopment and that is the major flaws with movies today...they are all about blowing things up and not about defining the heros, this movie did just that, especially with the character of Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett). Hartnett gives an excellent performance of the farm boy who grew up with a tough father and considered his only family to be his best friend Rafe (Ben Affleck). I found this movie to be more than a love story it was a story of true friendship and how life gets in the way of that. Bruckheimer and Bay did an excellent job with the attack on Pearl as well. The attack was not all the movie was about it was something that happened to all these people in their quiet peaceful world one Sunday morning. The movie was not just an excuse to create a bigger and better explosion it told a story that the attack on Pearl Harbor was much greater than the physical damage and what brought America into the war. It made our generation realize that there was life going on on this island and that was interrupted and peoples' universes were severly altered because of this event. I think in history class they lose that aspect of the attack and this movie brings that out for everyone to remember. I now have a greater respect for those who fought in the war or had anything to do with it. And if that is something that the producers had wanted to do with this film they certainly accomplished their mission. This movie was very well done. It was exciting, fun, heartbreaking, patriotic, a true tale of heroism and loyalty! Don't listen to the critics I never liked a movie they liked and I always love the ones they hate. This movie has crept up and stole the favorite movie spot for me.

I just purchased the DVD and watched it yesterday with my husband and we were mesmerised by this film! When it was over, we could hardly believe how long it was. The action and continuity is captivating, the cast is amazing. I think this a film to be placed on the shelf with all the greatest epics to be enjoyed only when you have the complete time and attention to give only to this film. It is an inspiring story, a reminder of what America will do when ''the gloves come off.'' If you collect films, your library is incomplete without this picture! The extra features are great, very informative and sympathetic. I'm actually considering visiting Hawaii just to pay my respects at the memorials.

This movie was one of the best movies that i have ever seen! I found it sad that Danny had to die in the end right when he was going to be a father. This movie also made me cry. I think that Josh Hartnett and Ben Affleck acted really well and i really enjoyed this movie just as well as i enjoyed titanic. Do not listen to the critics they should have given this movie perfect stars. It was the best!

My wife and I saw this movie about a dozen times and we never got tired of it. It had everything in this movie, that has been lost in others for years, style, grace, beauty, and class. It has love, action, a story, and so many stirring moments. The musical score was outstanding by Hans Zimmer. When I saw the trailer of this movie I was touched to a large lump in my throat of how great it was and seeing was better then I had expected. I hope it gets some awards.

This movie blends every element so well, it's astonishing! The plot is excellent and a balance between love story and actions simply take this movie to the top spot... If you think Titanic was good, wait till you watch this... Definitely a must watch, trust me, you wouldn't want to miss this!
