Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kryssa Schemmerling
As oversized and sleek as a vintage Cadillac, this sprawling World War II epic directed by action-specialist Michael Bay is an old-fashioned melodrama retrofitted with all the high-tech special effects money can buy -- think Saving Private Ryan crossed with Titanic. Bay and producer Jerry Bruckheimer always dish out disaster and mayhem with style, but in Pearl Harbor they also add a healthy helping of romance. The story, which unfolds in Hawaii as Japan prepares for its fateful attack on the American fleet, follows two young farm boys turned ace fighter pilots Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett, who find their lifelong friendship challenged when they both fall in love with the same beautiful young nurse Kate Beckinsale. The characters -- unfailingly earnest, sentimental, patriotic, and heroic -- are a deliberate throwback to an earlier, less complicated era of American moviemaking. "We may lose this battle, but we’re gonna win this war," says Alec Baldwin, portraying the famed airman Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle with definitive bombast. "You know why?" he asks, pointing to Affleck and Hartnett. "Because of them." Pearl Harbor is that kind of picture; and one with plenty of retro Hollywood glamour on display, too. The three stars -- Beckinsale, with her ruby-red lips and Veronica Lake hairdo; the young men, all broad shoulders and rippling muscles -- never look anything less than gorgeous, whether dodging bombs or posing in period bathing suits against surging surf. The high point of the film, of course, is the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, and here Bay truly excels. State-of-the-art cinematography and effects make for a thrilling and harrowing extended sequence that plays like a mini disaster movie. It brings the horror of America’s first "Day of Infamy" vividly to life. Viewed in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States, Pearl Harbor, for all its gloss, resonates and moves in ways that Bay and Bruckheimer probably never could have imagined when they made it.
Los Angeles Times
Bay, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the entire cast and crew have given us a Pearl Harbor to remember. Kevin Thomas

    Unbelievable!!!

Thank you Michael Bay for telling the true story of Pearl Harbor. These Men were heroes and sooo good looking! I had no idea all those things happened! Those love stories never make it into the history books. It's great to see a totally fact based account of our greatest moments finally make it to the big screen. And it's no wonder we, once again, have Michael Bay to thank! He is a total genius! God Bless You Michael Bay! Now I know the real history of Pearl Harbor!

    Amazing Movie

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen related to World War II. My grandpa fought in WWII and this movie hit home. I think it is a fairly accurate depiction of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and shows that the war was completely different from what most military during this time expected. We watched this movie in my history class because of its accurate details, and the good love story can't hurt!! If you are a war movie fan, or a romance fan, I would totally recommend this movie to you.

    A DISASTER OF EPIC PROPORTIONS

I would venture to guess that most of the 4 and 5 star rated comments on this site for Michael Bay's notoriously rotten "Pearl Harbor" were penned by people born a bit before or after 1970. The gushing raves reveal a pathetic lack of historical knowledge and complete ignorance of the past early and mid-twentieth century America. The same can be said for the film "Pearl Harbor". Unlike worthy film recreations such as "From Here To Eternity", "In Harm's Way" and "Tora! Tora! Tora! (the latter a masterpiece of accuracy and exposition compared to Bay's stinker!), "Pearl Harbor" is so cliche ridden and phony that it might as well be "Star Wars", so devoid is it of anything remotely human or engaging. As far as I'm concerned, Michael Bay and Screenwriter Randall Wallace have figuratively etched grafitti on the Pearl Harbor monument in Hawaii. No amount of earnest (often bad) acting, widescreen, candy colored cinematography, an insistent, overbearing music score and interminable length can hide the fact that this film is pure unadulterated junk designed to please the ignorant masses. Simply put, this is one of the biggest Hollywood turkeys of all time.

    this is a MOVIE!!!

I find it interesting people get angry over this movie saying it's not realistic and doesn't follow the true events that happened at Pearl Harbor. To those I say this.. "IT'S A MOVIE!!!" The sheer purpose of a movie is to be entertained. If you want the true facts that happened, then read a history book or get a documentary from the History Channel. Michael Bay is known for creating action, larger than life characters. Heck.. 99% of Jerry Bruckheimer films consist of macho, over the top action packed movies.. James Cameron got alot of slack for making Titanic. Michael Bay is doing the same thing here. Creating a love story around an actual event. So... If you want to be entertained, watch this movie. If you want to know the true facts about what happened at Pearl Harbor, then visit your local library.

An insult to Pearl Harbor survivors

This movie is absolutely terrible. It still has steam coming off of it, if you know what I mean. We should not let our patriotism over a very important moment in history cloud our judgment to the fact that this movie is an insult to anyone who is, or has a family member that is or was a Pear Harbor survivor (and more so for family members of any casualties). The story is so sappy and forced and cliche-ridden, there are reels and reels of inaccuracies, and Josh Hartnett delivers his standard Easter Island statue-like performance. If the producers and director of this piece of garbage wanted to make a stupid, unrealistic love story, it would have been less insulting (though doubtfully any better of a movie) had they used something other than one of the most important and pivotal moments in American history as a backdrop for their idiotic and self-serving schmaltz. Again, just because it is a movie about an event we, as Americans, can rally around, doesn't make it a good movie--in fact, it's the opposite. Because this movie is so terrible, it is a slap in the face to anyone that died there or survived that day.

My most detested movie of all time.

Whenever people ask me 'What's your least favorite movie of all time?' The first one to enter my mind is consistantly Pearl Harbor. The characters are wooden, at best. They are irrational, unsympathetic, and exceedingly obnoxious (Ben Affleck in particular). The name Pearl Harbor is also something of a misnomer, considering the movie has almost nothing to do with the actual event. Even during the attack the movie is focused upon the tangled, ridiculous, and fabricated (again, at best) web of the character's relationships. I wouldn't have cared if they had all perished. It would have been better than the cheesy, 'tragically picturesque,' ending-with-a-bow they stuck onto the end.

    Great film

I loved this movie, it was a romantic love story and a tragedy all in one. The casting was done well, Josh Hartnett is so hot. The only thing that makes this film not 5 stare material is the fact that the totally hot, cute guy dies, Josh is so much better than ben!!!!!

    AN OUTSTANDING MOVING

This movie had my attention from beginning to end. Danny (played by Josh Hartnett) was my favorite character. This is a movie I will watch over and over because of the beautiful love story between Danny and Evelyn. Also, the war scenes seemed so real and were very interesting. Excellent writers and excellent cast. Thank you for making this wonderful movie.

    Pearl Harbor--Not a Must-See

Pearl Harbor, a very popular movie based on how the United States entered World War II, was very disappointing. The movie lacked accurate historical data. The Japanese attack on Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, happened at approximately 7:30 a.m. The film tries to lead you to realize how surprising the surprise attack was by showing you bits and pieces of America’s activities right before the country was attacked. The movie portrays a little league baseball game, a lady hanging up her clothes to dry, and children playing, all at this early hour, seeming a little hard to believe. Another troubling point in Pearl Harbor was how it relayed the message that all of President Roosevelt’s plans were immediately concurred with by Congress, when actually he was met with much resistance by the group. The public also disagreed with Franklin D. Roosevelt’s decision to get involved in World War II. However, that is entirely skipped in the motion picture. While Pearl Harbor had some great sound effects and computer-generated scenes of the Japanese attacks on America, the movie as a whole did not do history justice. There are many historical inaccuracies in it, and it is focused more as a love story than on the segment of history itself. Serious viewers wanting a clear-cut look at history will find it hard to watch Pearl Harbor to get the facts straight. The movie is not a must-see.

    Unforgettable.

Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer have given us another great action/drama. The movie is long, but amazing. 2/3 of Pearl Harbor is okay, pretty funny, and romantic. And 1/3 of the movie is nothing but gripping, dramatic scenes of war. I say again: This is a very good movie. I am shocked that not many people liked it. It should've gotten some Academy Awards. By the way, the action sequences are spectacular.
