Following this, happiness turned to sadness with President McKinley's assassination, the sinking of the great ocean liner Titanic, and then the Great War in 1914. Other events that took place during this time included the women's suffrage movement, the failed campaigns of the Russian Revolution in 1905, and the first meeting of the African National Congress in South Africa.
