The straightforward story concerns the Darling family, specifically the children: Wendy, Michael and John. Wendy enjoys telling her younger siblings stories about the mythical Peter Pan, the little boy who never grew up. One night, much to everyone's surprise, Peter flies into the Darling nursery, in search of his shadow, which Wendy had previously captured. Sprinkling the kids with magic pixie dust, Peter flies off to Never-Never Land, with Wendy, Michael and John following behind. Once in Peter's domain, the children are terrorized by Captain Hook, who intends to capture Peter and do away with him. After rescuing Indian princess Tiger Lily from Captain Hook, Peter must save the children, not to mention his own "Lost Boys," from the diabolical pirate captain. In addition, he must contend with the jealousy of tiny sprite Tinker Bell, who doesn't like Wendy one little bit. Breaking with several traditions, Peter had been played by a girl in all previous incarnations, Tinker Bell had always been depicted by a shaft of light, etc ... this "Disneyized" version of Peter Pan may not be authentic James Barrie, but it has never failed to enthrall audiences of all ages. Adding to the fun are the spirited voiceover performances by Bobby Driscoll Peter, Hans Conried Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, Kathryn Beaumont Wendy and Bill Thompson Smee, and the sprightly songs by Sammy Cahn, Sammy Fain, Ollie Wallace, Erdman Penner, Ted Sears, Winston Hibler, Frank Churchill and Jack Lawrence.

Peter Pan's stature as one of Disney's most beloved animated features is a testament not only to the animators' artistry but also to a fantasy so irresistible it inspired its own syndrome. A benchmark of the studio's second Golden Age (which began with 1950's Cinderella), Peter Pan (1953) liberates James M. Barrie's timeless story from its stage-bound conventions. Peter (voiced by Bobby Driscoll) is portrayed as an actual boy, and Nana as an actual dog. Tinker Bell is fleshed out as the screen's most fetching fairy, as opposed to a dancing dervish of light. And no wired acrobatics can beat this film's stunning set piece, the Darling children's flight over nighttime London toward Never Land, where the "Lost Boys," wild Indians, Captain Hook, and his sidekick Smee await. The soaring musical score includes the Disney standards "You Can Fly," "Follow the Leader," and "A Pirate's Life for Me." This two-disc Platinum Edition takes Peter Pan to dazzling heights with newly produced featurettes that chronicle the film's history. "A Fairy's Tale" puts to rest the rumor that Tinker Bell was modeled on Marilyn Monroe. Also included is a dramatic reading of a magazine article, credited to Walt Disney, titled "Why I Made Peter Pan." Unearthed treasures from the Disney archives include two lost songs, "Pirates Song" and "Never Land," originally written in 1940. A thorough audio commentary hosted by Roy Disney features, among others, film historian Leonard Maltin, author of The Disney Films, Kathryn Beaumont, the voice of Wendy, and legendary animators Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and Marc Davis. This two-disc set is DVD pixie dust that will enchant a new generation, who will be carried away by a story and film that will never grow old.

By 1953, the Disney studio had animation down to a fine science. Critics had gotten used to the magic of animation as well, which may explain why Peter Pan, an entertaining and agreeable little gem, did not receive as strong a critical reception as it deserved. Audiences, however, responded enthusiastically, and have continued to do so down through the years. Although the original story has been "Disneyfied", much to the chagrin of purists, the result is exciting, imaginative, and engaging. While the animation is excellent throughout, it reaches its apex in the thrilling flying sequences. Achieving a sense of flight is especially difficult in a two-dimensional medium such as a cartoon, so the craftsmen's work here (done, of course, without the aid of computers) is especially notable. Modern audiences may be made uneasy by the depiction of the Indian tribe, but the designs themselves are in a classic cartoon style. The character animation -- from Peter's cockiness to Tinkerbell's peevishness -- is first rate. As usual, the vocal casting and performances are top-notch, with Hans Conreid's Hook a particular delight. The score, including "You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!" and "A Pirate's Life," is winning and fits the story well. Peter Pan was a fine feather in the cap of its triumvirate of directors, who would soon go on to create the equally memorable Lady and the Tramp.

    A true Disney classic.

    Everyone should have a library of Disney classics for their children and grandchildren to enjoy. This story is charming and has Tinkerbell, the little fairy that enchants little girls everywhere.

    Not an authentic Disney Peter Pan DVD

    Very disappointed in what was to be a "new" Peter Pan dvd. While the item was shrink wrapped, it was clearly a photocopied cover and labels on the two dvds inside. No paper dvd guide was inside the cover either. I was very disappointed that the gift I gave my daughter for Christmas ended up not being a true copy of Peter Pan.

    The second star to the right and straight through 'til morning

    I purchased this DVD set for my 3 1/2 year old son. He loves the story, the characters and the action. It is the movie he requests nearly every evening and wants to take along with him every day. I will admit I enjoy watching it with him too.
    The movie has also inspired him to play Hook and Pan with his mates and tell his own pirate stories. It has sparked his imagination and enchanted him.
    We have also rented the Return to Neverland and Tinker Bell movies which compliment the original story.

    A classic all the way!

    What can you say about a classic? It's a classic for a reason! Great fun! These Disney movies can be a bit scary for the wee little ones, but everybody should own them before they go back to the vault. I purchased this for my eight month old little girl to enjoy in a few years down the road. I will save it, and when she is old enough I will give it to her. After all, I think these movies go into the Disney vault for ten years, so if you want it, get it now before it's gone.

    Oh thank god for the movie magician Walt Disney!

    This is a A+ fil. It is a treat for all ages it was a perfect film in the 20th centruy and it stands as strong and tall, this centruy.

    WOW! By far the greatest story ever told! Every time I watch this film I am wisked away to a magical world unlike any other. I can fly, fight pirates, & hang out with all the lost boys. I think it's beautifl to think of a land were you never have to grow up and can play with as many children you want to untill you all get tired and go to sleep together. Truely a fantastic adventure of wonder!

    Oh the memories!

    It's been so long since I had seen this movie! It's even better than before since I'm able to reminisce about my childhood and sings the songs along with the movie. Go and share it with the world!

    In Ecstatic Bliss

    I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie!!!! Yes, I am pre-ordering! Finally!! Besides the Little Mermaid this was the other movie I was desperately waiting for to come out in a 2 disc edition. I absolutely loved this movie as a kid, I absolutely love it now. March 06, can't come soon enough!!

    brian''the oompa loompa'' ladd

    i love this movie, because i feel like tinker bell in real life. i feel like im three foot shorter than everybody and no one can see how good i look in a mini skirt.

    ANOTHER DISNEY LANDMARK

    Although not quite as painterly or detailed as the the cartoon features of the late 30's and early 40's, this spirited, unpretentious adaptation of the Barrie classic deserves a high place in the Diney canon for merely the 'flying over London'' sequence alone; the remainder of the film never quite matches that segment despite the fine quality of the animation. This was the first movie I ever saw and it holds a special place in my heart.
