Overview

Pictures is an expansive biopic about pioneer photographers Walter and Alfred Burton. Through the eyes of the ubiquitous Burton brothers, we are treated to the history of New Zealand's colonial era. Obviously, a film of this nature would mean more to New Zealanders than to anyone else, but director Michael Black does his best to broaden the film's appeal. At 87 minutes, Pictures is never around so long as to wear out its welcome. The film could, however use a little more humanity and a little less posing and posturing.

This mini series is about a determined flapper who makes it her life's work to not only break into pictures but become a star. It's delightful and funny, with bits of the absurd touched with some sadness. Production is careful, and set dressing and costumes are excellent. Any student or fan of the period will enjoy the details and learn something of the 1920s in England, as well as the moving picture business. I recommend it highly. FYI: the editorial review at the time of this writing is incorrect. This is a fictional account of the main character's story.
