Overview

Based on the exercise program developed by fitness pioneer Joseph Pilates, this popular workout regime is based on the theory that strength comes from the core. Certified Pilates instructor Ana Caban leads the viewer through a series of instructions and demonstrations before beginning a 20-minutes session of abdominal and back-strengthening activities. While the concept of improving posture and looking lean is not new, the method certainly is. This video from Living Arts Studio is a fresh approach to the world of health and fitness and clings to the maxim of feeling better in ten sessions, looking better in 20, and having a completely new body in 30.

I just received my DVD and I love it. I do feel energized and longer in body. I enjoy Ana Caban and her instruction very much. The session was over so quickly and was not complex. I look forward to gaining strength and slimming down. Thank you! MNM

Although Pilates is a proven approach to strengthening the abdomen and lower back, this video is a poor introduction. The Director must be a refugee from the 70's. The ''Shaft'' type soundtrack is laughable and as for the video - the colored filters, jump cuts, and ''artistic'' camera angles are enough to induce vertigo. Instructor Caban and assistant Tara are easy on the eyes but beginners would be better off taking classes at the gym to learn the technique and a rudimentary sequence of Pilates moves. Sorry Ana. This tape/DVD is the very basics of Pilates and worthwhile for the true beginner. It gives a lot of introduction before the workout begins. The workout itself is only 20 minutes. If you have taken even one live class, it will likely be too basic. Skip this one and just buy the Intermediate workout which is excellent and about the vigorousness level of a typical live class.

On top of the poor production that was already talked about in another review, the instruction is off. I've taken several pilates sessions with private instructors and with videos and this instructor instructs you to inhale when exerting which is never the case! Pass on this video if you want to learn pilates correctly.

Sorry,''Dissers''.... I researched and tried out several videos from my local library. This is a perfect beginning regimen. I am still nursing a sore back from attemping exercises in one of the other ''beginning'' workouts. This is my first workout routine, I am 40 years old, 5'7'' and 125lbs and have good flexibility.... this video is in no way too basic for me as a beginner.

I started off with Winsor Pilates, but it was lacking in instruction. I bought this, and learned so much that I didn't know. It IS very basic, and shows you only a handful of moves (which is why I gave it 4 stars) but the moves are slow so that you can concentrate on what you are doing while you do it, therefore, doing it correctly. If you have had basic introduction to Pilates, I would skip this one and go on to the intermediate. If you are a beginner, then this is perfect for you!

I took a two-year hiatus from rigorous workouts after seriously injuring both legs from knee down--shins, achilles, ankles (don't ask). This workout not only enhances flexibility the length of my legs and into my ankles without stressing the ankles like an elastic band Pilates workout would, but also effectively works the muscles in my thighs, buns and abs, where I need it. This workout is an all around safe and effective choice for a true beginner or someone in need of rehab, like me. I give it only four stars, however, because of that breathing technique thing which someone earlier commented on--inhaling while exerting. I struggle with this because my inclination is to do the opposite throughout the workout. (I have never taken a Pilates class and this is my first exposure to Pilates instruction.)

I got this to lose weight and I have been enjoying the exercises. It's something I can do and stick with. I wish there was a bit more variety, though.

I believe this is the best beginning mat workout. Ana Caban does not go too fast and she does a great job explaining the correct postures and positions.

This was my intro to Pilates. Ana gives great instruction. There is someone else doing a modified version so you can start there if you can't follow Ana. As you get to know the exercises, you can do the exercises as she gives the instruction, and then skip to the next exercise easily on the DVD to get through the video faster. After 1 month of doing it practically everyday, I can follow Ana for all the exercises. I feel a calm energy all day after I do the video. I highly recommend!

I started taking Pilates lessons back in 2000. I decided to purchase a video to help me keep up my practice at home. Dare I say, I actually liked this video better than the actual class! Ana is a clear, concise, encouraging instructor who easily coaches you into each of the poses, and tells you where to focus your energy for maximum benefit. There's also another person doing modified versions of each exercise, in the event that you can't do the full movement at first. Perfect pace for beginners or those in need of a refresher. This video (I had it on VHS back in 2000 when it was first released) did such a great job that with regular practice, I was consistently out-performing all the other students in my weekly Pilates class, much to the surprise of the instructor, the other students, and myself. This was such a great buy, I'm re-purchasing it to help me ease back into my practice. And I'm purchasing a copy for a friend! Of the several Pilates DVD's I've tried out over the years, this is by far my favorite. Challenging enough to keep you engaged, but paced well enough to prevent beginners from becoming discouraged. I've shared this video with numerous friends, many of whom have become Pilates aficionados and Ana Caban fans. And for the price, you can't go wrong.

Ana Caban moved at a slow pace to give beginners a chance to learn the moves. After two weeks I noticed a big difference in my flexibiity and strength. Other tapes I tried were advanced and moved way too fast for a beginner. I would recommend this tape for beginners who want to learn the Pilates moves. I enjoyed the tape so much I ordered the Pilates Intermediate Mat Workout.

I like this exersice it is easy.

While a few of the moves make me feel just plain silly, this is a great workout for your ''core'' muscles as well as your upper thighs. The instructor Ana explains things really well and she has a sense of humor about the movements. All of the movements are offered in modified ways so that beginners without a lot of flexibility can participate. At the end of this workout I can feel it in my abs and I can already see the changes.
