Overview

This collection of footage Peter Whitehead shot for his look at "Swinging London" on the cusp of the psychedelic revolution, Tonight Let's All Make Love In London, featuring the music Pink Floyd recorded for the documentary (with Syd Barrett still on guitar), has been given a solid DVD release in this edition from Snapper Music. Pink Floyd: London 1966/1967 has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and while the source materials occasionally show their age (and the grain of their 16mm origins), the colors are clear and vivid, the images look as sharp as the footage allows, and the overall look is both pleasing and appropriate to the material. The audio has been mastered in two formats, Dolby Digital Stereo (retaining the original monophonic sound mix) and Dolby Digital 5.1, and the music is well-served, though these recordings sound somewhat primitive compared to what Pink Floyd would soon accomplish with The Piper At The Gates of Dawn. The interviews and narration are in English, with no subtitles or multiple language options included. Bonus materials include a spoken introduction from filmmaker Whitehead, a montage of footage of London's underground community in 1967, and interviews (shot for Tonight Let's All Make Love In London) with Mick Jagger, Julie Christie, Michael Caine and David Hockney. It's a bit puzzling that Tonight Let's All Make Love In London was not included in its entirety (or that the Pink Floyd material was not simply made a bonus on a DVD release of that movie), but fans of Pink Floyd's early era and those fascinated by London's mid-Sixties salad days as the center of the hip universe will find this entertaining.
