What do I want to watch tonight? The same thing I want to watch every night: Pinky and the Brain! This four-disc set chronologically gathers episodes from the second and third seasons of the Animaniacs spin-off in which the best-laid plans of mice and, um, mice to take over the world are hilariously foiled. There seems to be no flagging of inspiration as the cracked writing staff comes up with even more intricate and twisted schemes devised by brilliant gene-spliced lab mouse Brain (voiced to Wellesian perfection by Maurice LaMarche). In "Brain of the Future," Brain and his clueless co-conspirator, Pinky (Rob Paulsen), travel back in time (to A.D. 2 billion) to retrieve a world domination kit. In "Hoop Schemes," Brain endeavors to become a celebrated basketball star. In "The Real Life," Brain's most dastardly plot yet finds him constructing a radio transmitter from which to broadcast a recording of Rush Limbaugh singing Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver" (mercifully unheard) that will drive the populace insane. By the time of "A Pinky and the Brain Halloween," all Brain needs to do in order to take over the world is to sell his soul. Enter Mr. Itch (voiced by Garry Marshall), "proprietor of wayward souls." Pinky's sublime silliness plays very well with kids, but as with the classic Warner Bros. cartoons of old, the inspired voice work and ingenious wordplay will be even more entertaining to adults. The dizzying pop culture references range from Esther Williams and mimes Shields & Yarnell to snaps at Pauly Shore, Greta Van Susteren, and folksy lawyer Gerry Spence. "The contents of Ted Koppel's pocket" is an actual punch line. Too clever for its own good? Hardly. Pinky and the Brain is so good because it's too clever. Are you pondering what I'm pondering? Yes: Volume 3!
