Overview

Pinocchio, a classic from the Disney vaults, comes to DVD in a THX-certified full-frame transfer. Viewers can hear Jiminy Cricket sing "When You Wish Upon a Star" in either English or French thanks to the language selections. A very nice addition to this disc is the inclusion of the original theatrical trailer from 1940. There are subtitles in English, and the Dolby Digital Stereo English track is closed-captioned.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Though only Disney's second feature-length cartoon, Pinocchio is still celebrated as one of the company's greatest achievements for its Academy Award-winning music, its humor, its beauty, and, most of all, its production value. Determined to make an animated film that improved upon its predecessor, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Walt Disney employed over 750 staff members on Pinocchio and worked them relentlessly for several years. Technicians developed an enhanced multiplane camera that could dolly in and out of an animated scene (similar to live-action photography), as opposed to Snow White's vertical method of shooting. Animators pioneered using glass plates over the animation to create a realistic underwater look for the scene in the ocean, and established a technique called "the blend" to give the two-dimensional animation some depth. Twelve artists labored for 18 months to design the character of Pinocchio alone, and the perfectionist Walt Disney is rumored to have thrown out over 2,300 feet of footage (at least five months of work) because it did not fit his vision. Pinocchio's box-office returns did not surpass Snow White's, but its ingenuity and polish impressed critics and further established Disney as an artistic force.

    I'm A Real Boy

hen you think of classics, this has to be at the top of the list! So much emotion, that you really feel for the little wooden puppet and want him to become a real boy. Made in 1940, but still relevant today. Get it while you can.

    A TIMELESS MASTERPIECE

The greatness of Disney's second full length animated feature is so obvious that waxing poetic about it is at this late date is over-redundant. Suffice it to say that the grounbreaking acheivement of SNOW WHITE a couple years earlier came to full fruition with PINNOCHIO; FANTASIA and BAMBI soon followed, culminating in the most brilliant phase of Disney's career. No other animated feature has blended storytelling, imagery, music and sound as successfully as PINNOCHIO has and the more recent Disney and Dreamworks creations don't hold a candle to what ''Uncle Walt's artisans did 60 some odd years ago

RE: This Pinocchio should remain in the past

I just wanted to address this review in case it influenced anyone into NOT buying this movie.

Pinocchio does NOT glamorize smoking and drinking. In fact it goes out of its way to show that bad actions can have dire consequences. No one got off Pleasure Island scott free. Every little boy that ended up there had a painful and frightening transformation into literal jackasses and were shipped off to the circus or to work in a mine. Not even Pinocchio, who in the end is rescued by his conscience, gets away unscathed.

Pinocchio is a wonderful movie, but it does have situations that are not appropriate or may be too scary for the very young. I had fond memories of watching this from my childhood and I'm looking forward to when my toddlers are old enough to enjoy this classic with me.

    Pinocchio in Blu-ray

Pinocchio is a Disney classic and to watch it in blu-ray makes the characters lively. My 4-year old son watches Pinocchio over and over without becoming bored.

Classic movie and entertaining. Not necessarily for very young children. Life lessons and some scary parts for young ones.

This Pinocchio should remain in the past

We were shocked and dissappointment with watching the Blue-ray version of Pinocchio - we had forgotten how we have changed in our culture...no more smoking on shows, in public places and certainly no encouragement in children shows. The age of Pinocchio comes out when you see these, almost distasteful scenes, where cigarettes are a norm. The children's island was full of negative children behavior; I cannot understand what we were thinking if we watched this as children. I certainly would not show this to my grandchildren; they are fortunately growing up in a more health conscience environment.
