Overview

This animated musical is the newest incarnation of Astrid Lindgren's mischievous, magical Pippi Longstocking, the nine-year-old daughter of a sea captain whose adventures have delighted young readers, moviegoers and television fans for generations. The tale begins as Pippi sails the seas with her father. A storm tosses him overboard, but just before he disappears he promises his daughter that he will return to their home at Villa Villekulla. Pippi returns home to raise herself amongst a menagerie of interesting animals. She supports herself with a cache of gold coins given to her by her father. Pippi's friends include her neighbors Tommy and Annika, who find her a refreshing change from the boredom of their suburban lives. Together the trio get into good-natured trouble with the townsfolk. Real trouble comes in the form of two idiotic thieves who try to steal Pippi's money. Songs include"Pluttifikation" and "A Bowler and a New Gold Tooth."

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Here's a colorful, tuneful blast of girl power in the indefatigable animated form of Pippi Longstocking, the beloved character from Astrid Lindgren's books, brought to rambunctious life in this 1997 Canadian-German-Swedish co-production. Freckled, pigtailed Pippi is a "there's magic everywhere" kind of girl, and she lives an adventurous, unfettered life. Two vacationing city kids, Tommy and Annika, make the pleasure of Pippi's acquaintance when she returns to her home -- a neighboring country cottage -- accompanied by her faithful horse and playful monkey. Her father, a sea captain, was washed overboard during a storm, but he assured her “I’m so fat…I’ll float,” and sent her home to await his return. Pippi's carefree independence delights the children but scandalizes Mrs. Prysselius (haughtily voiced by Catherine O'Hara), who demands that "Little Miss Mayhem" be placed in a children's home. Meanwhile, two bumbling crooks set their sights on Pippi's cache of gold coins, but as one character observes, "If anyone can take care of herself, it's Pippi," and the bad guys meet with Home Alone-style comeuppance. Although the film’s traditional, cel-drawn animation has gone out of style in this computer-animated age, it brightly complements this precocious heroine's misadventures; and the force of Pippi's upbeat personality more than carries the day.
