This is classic literature--reference to classics, the Holy Bible, and poetry throughout. A re-visioning of the greatest story ever told, yet few people acknowledge the writer for his extraordinary ability to combine science, fiction, and religion. Fry's sacrific allows Riddick's rebirth. This is in the same class as the original Star Wars trilogy for weaving in universial themes and literary motif. Far more than the average sci-fi thriller produced today.

This is truly a masterpiece of Science Fiction and an interesting study in human nature with profound messages similar to those in films such as Fahrenheit 451, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Metropolis, Logan's Run, and Blade Runner. The internal struggles of the characters (spirituality, self-sacrifice, fear, temptation, addiction, guilt, mastery of fear, human kindness, self-interest, resourcefulness, etc.) add a tremendous amount of depth to the story. The guilt of the captain over her early impulsive actions and the penance she ultimately pays for her mistake are deeply touching and almost made me cry. The stark landscape setting really allows us to focus on the characters - their personalities, motives, relationships, actions, etc. The emulation of Jack for Riddick is beautifully done, very quickly and easily charming us to both characters. The story is very well written, with the acting equally well done, showcasing the relationships between the characters. The Riddick/Johns relationship is interesting, particularly their respect for one another: Some kind of "code of ethics" between bounty hunters and the convicts they pursue? Also of note is the hero worship of Jack for Riddick, and the hero's subsequent defense/protection of her several times, in various ways, against multiple threats. Additionally, the interplay between the captain and Johns (his manipulation of her, and her judgment mixed with empathy of him) really adds dimension to these characters and the overall story. This is one of the few films I have seen that seems absolutely perfectly cast, particularly Jack who is difficult to distinguish between boy and tomboy - she is very believable. The creatures/monsters are extremely well done, both their appearances and movements. I think this is a much better story than the Alien and Predator movies, though I enjoy those as well. The humor in this story is exquisite - the "looks clear" scene is one of my favorite bits of this movie. Given the intensity behind Mr. Diesel's acting, it is amazing that he is capable of adding this type of "lightness" to his work. And the tension present throughout the film is tremendous. We are literally "on pins and needles" as we watch the action from our observer position and instantly recognize the mistakes of the characters (delay, poor choices, etc.) leading toward their doom with no way to warn them or urge them to hurry. I don't understand the term "cult" applied to this film because that seems to imply a select viewership and I believe this movie has the power to please a variety of peoples, though especially fans of Science Fiction and human-interest stories. I call this one of my "treadmill movies" (to watch while exercising) because the miles pass in a non-painful flash. A special thanks to the many people involved in making this movie for the wonderful quality of distraction and thoroughly engrossing entertainment. I am unable to choose a favorite between Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick. I am pleased they are remarkably different from one another. I believe they are both equally significant in their contribution to great classics of Science Fiction.-- J.H. Sweet, author of The Fairy Chronicles

Great sci-fi movie...Vin Diesel does a great job. Check out the Chronicles of Riddick and the game, both do not disappoint.

This was a very well-done sci-fi thriller, somewhat similar to Aliens, with a great deal of suspense. It had great camera work and fantastic visuals, as well as interesting characters. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat, and makes you think that monsters are around every corner. This was also Vin Diesel first starring role in a feature film, and an indicator of performances in future roles. The movie was a fairly original idea, as far as the planetary eclipse bringing darkness every 22 years and the aliens only coming out in the dark. The main problem is that the DVD has nothing by way of extra bonus features. Sci-Fi Channel did a fantastic hour-long 'investigation' into Radik and his story - why he was in prison, where is silvered eyes came from, etc., similar to the 'Curse of the Blair Witch' (the addemnum to the 'Blair Witch Project' movie). It was very well done, but for whatever reason it was not included on the DVD. Perhaps with the coming 'Radik Chronicles' movie, they will re-release this movie with an extra disk or something.

For this genre of film this one excels, the special effects in regards to the alien creatures are believable, the pace is on time, and the casting works well. This is a movie with no sequel, how nice.

When I heard about this movie from a friend, I was really anxious to see it. Although it was a decent movie, it was ultimately a disappointment. But it's a good movie for sci-fi fanatics.

This movie has a great opening and a great ending. Although it did run into a few problems in between. It also has a few throw away characters, like the holy man and his followers. It has a B-movie like flavor to it but that just adds to its charm. The main stars do a good job and keep you interested in the story. A good movie for any Sci-Fi fans collection.

Picked up at the video store on a whim and with no expectations, I found this film entertaining and full of plot turns, characters and effects that kept me interested. The story is not particularly creative or new, survivors of a crash having to deal with murderous aliens, but it's well done. Not a great film, just greatly enjoyable. I've recommended it to all my fellow sci-fi movie fan friends.

I really like Fry. He could see at night where no one could. So he could see all the monsters and watch everybodys back ,when he isn't watching his.

I didn't really enjoy this movie. I thought it was boring and unbelievable. Although at times throughout the movie it displayed some pretty cool and well done special effects I still thought it was a cheap movie. One of the effects in the movie that I thought was annoying was a segment in the beginning where the tint of the screen was a bright orange which was suppost to represent the planet's light factor. Some of the actors in Pitch Black seemed to be very bad and untalented. The storyline was fine but just plain unbelievable. Even though in Science Fiction movies you are suppost to bend the truth, I couldn't. The dialogue in the movie i think sucked. When the movie reached its mid point i already wanted to stop watching it. My advice is not to buy this video just rent it.

I thought that this movie had a very clever premise. The cinematograhpy was beautiful. It was suspenseful and thrilling. I was on the edge of my seat, and I thought that was just an abstract concept until I saw this movie. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Vin Diesel was spectacular, and for all you Farscape fans, there was plenty of Claudia Black to satisfy. The movie had stunning reversals and surprises. Things were not always as they seemed and never what you expected.

I think Aliens is the best Science Fiction movie ever made. However Pitch Black is a close second. Like any great Sci-fi movie it has great effects, but doesn't rely on them to keep the story moving along. Has great performances all around, especially from Vin Diesel.

Pitch Black is the best movie I've ever seen. The character twists are great and the plot, though seemingly shallow, is pulled off in a very enjoyable way. It's my favorite movie!

This is one of the best movies I've seen in a long while. The suspense and drama will keep you on the edge of you seat. The Plot is very creative and interesting. It adds a twist to the age old theme of human vs. alien with the killer being able to see in the dark and the aliens only attacking in the dark. It has all of the key aspects of a good movie: drama, suspense, romance, and action. The best part is the love affair that just barley forms between the killer and the only living pilot. I can't wait until it comes out on video and anyone who is a movie buff like me should have this movie in their video arsenal.
