Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Agatha Christie's legendary Belgian sleuth, Hercule Poirot, delivers more dazzling deductions in this second collector's set of three episodes culled from London Weekend Television. Like the episodes included in Collector's Set 1, this trio aired on PBS's Mystery! series in the early 1990s. In "The Cornish Adventure," Poirot tries to discover who poisoned a middle-aged woman, even after her husband is arrested for the crime. An effective small-town setting gives this mystery some real atmosphere, and intrigue brews as Poirot's usually friendly relationship with Scotland Yard turns sour. "Double Sin" finds Poirot depressed and pondering retirement, leaving his affable sidekick, Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser), at sea as he tries to solve a case involving the theft of valuable antiques. Lovely seaside locales enhance this breezy affair, which is fueled by some surprising narrative misdirection along the way. "The Adventure of the Cheap Flat" combines a seemingly trivial case involving a young couple's real estate bargain with some international intrigue and the theft of submarine blueprints. But the fun comes from watching Poirot bridle at the intrusion of an FBI agent who’s been assigned to the latter case, as the refined and sophisticated detective proves to be more than a match for this brusque, can-do American. All three episodes expand the emotional scope of David Suchet's masterful portrayal of Poirot, as he flashes some real anger in the first, some real melancholia in the second, and a remarkable flair for the dramatic in the third. The result is a trio of adeptly dramatized mysteries that are as classy as they are classic.

David Suchet is the best Poirot!

As an Agatha Christie fan since my teens, I have watched every movie/TV adaptation that has come down the pike. Without a doubt, David Suchet is the only actor who combines all of Poirot's idiosyncracies into one package. Every one of these collections is worth watching and owning if you enjoy going back to them time after time.
