Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Hercule Poirot takes a surprising turn as a ladies' man in Agatha Christie's Poirot Collector's Set 5, an adaptation of three more Christie short stories that originally aired on PBS's Mystery! series. David Suchet stars as the Belgian sleuth, and the first of the three mysteries, "The Tragedy at Marsdon Manor," turns out to be a rather disjointed affair involving a murder at a reputedly haunted mansion. A much sharper episode, "The Mystery of the Spanish Chest," finds Poirot investigating the murder of the husband of a beautiful socialite, with possible marital infidelity figuring into the motive for a rather brutal crime. Poirot's typical self-confidence shines here, and it's a delight to hear him defend his own lack of modesty by straightforwardly asserting, "I am the best!" But "The Double Clue" is the highlight of this set, as a slick mystery involving a jewel robbery takes a backseat to Poirot's flirtation with an exiled Russian countess. For the ever-refined Poirot, of course, romance always stops well short of first base. But while the pair may not even go so far as to hold hands, they still raise a few eyebrows, particularly those of Poirot's ever-faithful sidekicks, Captain Hastings Hugh Fraser and Miss Lemon Pauline Moran. And fans of the series may be surprised to discover what Poirot will do for love. As always, superb production design and elegant Art Deco locales provide an impeccable ambience. The result is a trio of mysteries that prove Poirot is more than just the sum of his "little gray cells." He turns out to have a heart, after all.
