Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
A quintessential whodunit comes vividly to life in Agatha Christie's Poirot: Evil Under the Sun, a 2001 feature-length TV film aired on A&E. David Suchet returns as the fastidious Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, a role he created for the original London Weekend Television series in 1989 (it first aired in the U.S. on PBS's Mystery!). Evil Under the Sun follows the portly sleuth as he is forced to visit a seaside resort for a little diet and exercise and, of course, finds himself plunked down in the middle of a murder mystery. Luckily, Suchet’s Poirot has lost none of the charm he displayed in the original series. His futile protests against the resort’s health regimen -- its miniscule meals and lack of alcohol run quite against the grain of his sophisticated hedonism -- provide some of the film’s most amusing moments. It’s fun simply to watch the beads of sweat dripping off the detective’s waxed mustache as he's locked up in a steam cabinet. But he bears up well in the face of these indignities and does some first-class detective work to boot, solving a mystery rife with multiple levels of intriguing voyeurism and stocked with Christie's signature coterie of suspects. Evil Under the Sun was previously adapted in the ‘70s with Peter Ustinov as Poirot, but this austere and distinctly British version is more faithful to the novel. And Suchet's dead-on portrayal of Poirot -- acclaimed among many Christie fans as definitive -- is a joy to watch. This is classic detective fiction classically interpreted, a superb addition to the Christie/Poirot film oeuvre.

If you love Detective Poirot, you'll love this movie. David Suchet brings to life Poirot the way Agatha Christie wrote him.
