Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lewis Somoza Manalo
Not quite ready to let the phenomenon die, Ash, Pikachu, and friends are back in this third feature-length Pokémon movie, Spell of the Unown. The titular spell-casting Pokémon is accidentally unleashed by a mysterious little girl, and Greenfield finds itself under siege by fierce and ancient powers. Naturally, it's up to Ash and the gang to stop it, which involves unraveling the secrets of this rare breed of pocket monsters. Matters worsen when the powerful and legendary Pokémon Entei kidnaps Ash's mom -- introducing the reliable this-time-it's-personal angle. As with the previous two Pokémon movies, Spell of the Unown is a fan's delight, with an enjoyable balance of traditional and computer-generated animation that is a cut well above the TV programs. The hilarious animated short Pikachu and Pichu is also included, featuring dozens of new Pokémon in their screen debuts.
New York Times
Worthwhile morals abound in this film. Little Molly learns from a basso-voiced Pokémon, "If you believe in me, there is nothing I cannot do." There's a perky song with the lyric "Be the best that you can be." And reality is presented as a big improvement over fantasy. Anita Gates
