Police Squad! - The Complete Series

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
It’s justice at last for Police Squad, the criminally short-lived 1982 series perpetrated by Airplane! crew members Jerry and David Zucker and Jim Abrahamson. This DVD contains all six episodes, of which only four originally aired. A look at the classic opening credits sequence offers clues as to why, as someone notes in an episode commentary, the network "couldn't cancel us fast enough." No doubt viewers were confused that each ...

A look at the classic opening credits sequence offers clues as to why, as someone notes in an episode commentary, the network "couldn't cancel us fast enough." No doubt viewers were confused that each week the "special guest stars" Lorne Greene, William Shatner, Florence Henderson, et al., met with a grisly death as soon as they appeared onscreen. Surely they were puzzled that the onscreen episode title never matched what the stentorian narrator read. And what were they to make of a cast list that included Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln, firing back at an assailant from his Ford’s Theatre seat? Police Squad did to hard-boiled cop shows of the 1950s and '60s what Airplane did to disaster films. If it is funnier than the Naked Gun films it inspired and it is!, it's because it is truer to its small-screen source, the Lee Marvin-starring NBC entry M Squad in particular. Leslie Nielsen introduced his by-the-TV-book Det. Lt. Frank Drebbin character here, with Alan North as his rumpled superior, Ed. Police Squad affectionately sends up cop show conventions, from the deadpan narration and stock characters to the epilogue freeze frame, during which the unfortunate cast tries to hold their poses. Between the silly wordplay, non sequiturs, and foreground and background sight gags, Police Squad's drive-by pace requires strict attention, another probable reason for its quick demise. Some of the topical jokes are dated one gag involves a picture of former secretary of state Alexander Haig, but Police Squad still hits its target with deadly funny accuracy. Arresting extras that include commentaries for every episode, a gag reel, a segment about the genesis of the faux freeze frames, and an interview with Nielsen catapult this DVD to the top of Airplane and Naked Gun fans' Most Wanted list.
