Overview

A small-time pool shark with dreams of the big time seeks revenge against the mentor who did him wrong in this drama. Johnny Doyle (Mars Callahan) was a teenaged orphan when Joe (Chazz Palminteri) took him under his wing and taught him everything there is to know about shooting pool. Johnny became a genius with a cue, but while he dreamed of becoming a respected professional billiards player, Joe preferred to keep him working along the lower rungs of pool hustling. When Johnny learns just how far Joe has gone to keep him down, Johnny breaks away from him, but Joe and his thugs take revenge against Johnny by breaking his wrists. Tara (Alison Eastwood), Johnny's upper-crust girlfriend, urges him to get out of the pool racket, and Johnny grudgingly agrees, though he feels empty without the excitement of the table. Johnny renews ties with his younger brother Danny (Michael Rosenbaum), and begins to fear he's going to fall into the same sort of traps that snared him -- especially when he finds out that Joe has his eyes on Danny. Johnny decides to give pool playing another go, and teams up with Mike (Christopher Walken), who bankrolls hustlers and would like to take Joe down a notch or two. But Joe has found a new player, Brad (Rick Schroder), whose talent rivals Johnny's, and he's not sure if he knows a way to beat him on the green felt. Poolhall Junkies also features Rod Steiger in one of his final roles; the film didn't see theatrical release until nearly nine months after his death.

    Some People

I liked this movie a lot while not a real talented player I consider myself decent at pool and enjoy the game... this movie was not professional quality but was a good flick. And not to be picky the final game was 9 ball and the 9 was frozen not the 8..

I buy few movies but will buy this one!

This movie Rocked! From begining to end I was entertained. Christopher Walken, always a treat for those who like weird, was a guy you could hug when he Champions Johnny with a bankroll. You absolutely love it when 'RICKY' Rick SCHROEDER gets his cue cleaned! Not only is the comaraderie portrayed in such a way that you feel it, the positive message that all AMERICANS regardless of color can get along was AWESOME! POOLHALL is a must see!

no no no. not a good movie

The acting, dialogue, directing and production of this movie are very low quality. My friend suggested that I rent this movie thinking it would be up my alley.I should no longer speak to my friend. The con he pulls on the owner of the trailer dealership was right out of the 3rd grade. Lame-o!!! I am not into pool at all but I am into movies, and this one barely qualifies.I gave this move 2 stars because I was able to sit thru the whole thing. (I don't know how) I only give 1 star to movies I have to either walk out of or turn off like DREAMCATCHER or BATMAN AND ROBIN. Oh yeah, one more thing, Alison Eastwood is not a good actress. Sorry Clint.

    Poolhall Junkies Review

This is one of the better movies I've seen in the last year. Original, very funny, and exciting. It's no action packed adventure flick--it doesn't need to be. The characters and dialog are good enough for any half-smart movie fan. What are you wating for? BUY THIS MOVIE!

    This movie is brilliant...

This is a terrific movie. The Movie Guide does it no justice with its review. The soundtrack is amazing. It really works with the flow of the movie, similar to the soundtracks for Snatch and Oceans 11. This is definitely one of the more enoyable movies I've seen in a long time.

    Long wait to be disappointed

As an avid pool player I had waited excitedly for this movie to be released. I was quite disappointed. While the plot was what I expected, the filming and direction were sadly lacking. There were quite a few bad scene transitions; dialog was choppy and sometimes undecipherable ('Rack 'm Joe my fingers so'???). I have seen some reviews that compare this movie to 'The Hustler' and 'The Color of Money', believe me there is now comparison. While I think it is worth renting, don't waste your money to buy it. It could have been so much better! By the way, in the final game where the eight ball is frozen to the rail, I could have made that shot, as could anyone that supposedly had Johnny¿s talent.

    Callahan is a genius

First off, the MovieGuide review has some serious errors in plot line, but that isn't the point. The point is that this movie is great. It has substance: something you can take from it. It's funny, smart, serious, and exciting. The pool shots are sick with the perfect music to go along with them. And then there's the cast. Wow. Walken, Palminteri, Steiger? They are amazing. The younger guys (Rosenbaum, etc.) are great too as they are given some of the best scenes. Sure, it may be a somewhat classic story line, as it has been accused, but it's how you do these things that matter. When this movie's done you feel like jumping out of your chair and running around in circles it was so good. And when you're done with the laps you just want to sit and watch it again.
