Overview

Although he existed as a force on the American music scene for years prior, Roebuck "Pops" Staples fully arrived in the public consciousness during the '60s and '70s, as patriarchal head of the Staple Singers, one of the most enduring gospel (and funk crossover) acts of its kind -- best known for their huge early-'70s hits "I'll Take You There" and "Let's Do It Again." Although Staples pursued a career as a movie actor independently of his children, appearing in such films as David Byrne's 1986 True Stories and Barry Levinson's 1998 Wag the Dog, the late musician waited until the early '90s (and his mid-seventies) to emerge with two solo efforts (both on the Pointblank label): 1992's Peace to the Neighborhood and 1994's Father Father; he passed away six years after the latter. The home-video release Pops Staples: Live in Concert sees the gospel mainstay performing a number of his most towering solo hits live on-stage, late in his career.
