Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Nip/Tuck creator-writer Ryan Murphy's first series was this quirky, short-lived 1999 dramedy for the WB network about teens navigating Kennedy High School. Popular features Carly Pope as Samantha MacPherson, an unpopular brainiac who would rather write for the school paper than do anything else. Her counterpart is Brooke McQueen Leslie Bibb, a blonde who, as the leader of the school-ruling cheerleader squad The Glamazons, is very popular. The two are sworn enemies until Sam's mom, Jane Lisa Darr, marries Brooke's father, Mike Scott Bryce, forcing the girls to become sisters. This turns life upside down for Sam's clique, which includes handsome-but-dorky Harrison Christopher Gorham, the obligatory fat girl with the cheerleader dream, Carmen Sara Rue, and misfit Lily Tamara Mello. The sudden sisterhood also throws things out of whack for Brooke's pals, including the Glamazon co-captain, deliciously evil Nicole Tammy Lynn Michaels; the spoiled and air-headed Mary Cherry Leslie Grossman; the star quarterback and Brooke's boyfriend, Josh Ford Bryce Johnson; and Josh's football buddy Mike, a.k.a. Sugar Daddy Ron Lester. The series had a terrific offbeat quality to it, lacing its typical dramatic tales of high school angst with moments of hilarious comedy. The two-part series opener, "The Phantom Menace" and "Mo' Menace, Mo' Problems," introduces the characters and sets in sharp contrast a powerful underlying theme: Carmen is on a quest to become a Glamazon, while Brooke worries Josh is turning into a geek when he wants to be in a play. Strict biology teacher Bobbi Glass Diane Delano begins her reign of terror in "Under Siege" when she demands that Lily carry around the dead frog she refuses to dissect. Carmen invites all the cool girls to her 16th birthday party in "Slumber Party Massacre," with disastrous results. The homecoming queen is chosen in "Queen B.," but not before Cherry Cherry guest star Delta Burke leads her daughter's campaign. And Harrison's lesbian mother Alley Mills is introduced in "Wild Wild Mess," an episode that won the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation GLAAD Award for Media. Keep an eye out for Chad Lowe, Erik Estrada, and Peggy Lipton, all of whom guest-star in Season 1. Not your typical teen drama, Popular turned the anguish of high school into an eccentric mix of comedy, drama, romance, and camp that deserves multiple viewings to truly appreciate its originality.

    cancelled before its time

Popular was the best show ever put out by the WB, and that says a lot with heavy weights like Dawson's Creek and Felicity. This show was ended WAY before it should have been. It is hilarious and exposing. This series as a DVD collection is worth snagging. Perfect for a rainy Sunday. You will watch the whole season beginning to end. Smart humor and well developed characters make this show a laugh riot with relatability! Ryan Murphy does it best.

    The One that Got Away

This show was a diamond in the rough. Writers finally bottled the insanity of high school life. The writers took a bold step towards character development and made a break out gem. It doesn¿t matter if you were the offbeat kid (Lily), the nerd that consistently struck out (Harrison), or could have only been described as ¿unfiltered evil' (Nicole), there was a character for you to relate to. The kids deal with things from normal high school drama to GLBT issues set in a human jungle of a high school. With so many accolades and awards it¿s a wonder that WB let this show go¿but not to worry, you can buy it here on DVD and experience the madness again or for the first time. This was a brave, eccentric, and highly entertaining show, and a shame that WB let it go. I recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor and an inkling about the horrors of high school.
