    S'wonderful, s'marvelous...

    This is one of the most enjoyable operas on film I've ever seen. The rest of this review will be raves followed by the one serious problem, so if you don't want to read it all, do this: buy it, there will never be another film of Porgy this good. The cast all have perfect voices, acting ability and appearances for their roles. Willard White makes Porgy crippled and ignorant on the surface, but inside he's stronger and smarter than everyone else. He has no problem getting Porgy's wide range of emotions into his voice and face. The same goes for Cynthia Haymon as Bess. Her duet with Crown on Kittiwah Island is one of the highlights. Gregg Baker has a big voice and a build to match. He has a great time in the 'Red Headed Woman' scene. Damon Evans overacts Sportin' Life, but it fits in making his character different from everyone else. 'It Ain't Necessarily So' is a riot. My favorite is Cynthia Clarey as Serena. Her 'My Man's Gone Now' and 'Oh Doctor Jesus' both leave you shaking your head in amazement. Rattle and the London Phil are stoked way up for the fight scenes and hurricane, yet they have no trouble getting soft and luscious for 'Summertime' and the Strawberry Seller. As a nice touch he uses a jazz pianist for the solo in the opening bar scene. The other recordings I've heard all use a classical pianist, and this man blows them away. The one serious problem is that this is a film made in a studio, not a live performance. Rattle did performances with most of these singers, then made the recording, and they all got back together later to make this film. This means that everyone in this film is lip-synching, and I can't stand lip-synching. A live performance would have been so much nicer. What can be said about Gershwin's music? This opera is a 3-hour onslaught of fantastic arias, duets, and choruses. One scene floors you, and then the next one is even better. Several easily identifiable themes are used throughout. The picture quality is very good and the sound is excellent. Subtitles are in the vernacular (''I can't remember ever meetin' a nuthin' what I likes less than I does you'') and 3 other languages. S'awful nice, s'paradise...
