For starters, the feature has been given a slick remastering job; the anamorphic, letterboxed transfer offers stunning levels of detail and color and the Dolby 2.0 Stereo mix is crisp and clear, with a nice blend of the dialogue, the stirring John Williams score, and the plentiful sound effects. The first disc also offers a "Follow the Escape" option that allows the viewer to access a map of the ship during key points in the film and a pair of commentaries, one with director Ronald Neame and the other with actors Pamela Sue Martin, Carol Lynley, and Stella Stevens. Both tracks offer fun information for the film's fans, but Neame's track is the standout, an excellent nuts-and-bolts insight into the complexities of directing a large effects-oriented film. The second disc offers an array of featurettes new and old as well as a variety of vintage promo material. First is the AMC Backstory for The Poseidon Adventure, a tight half-hour look at the film from conception to release. This is followed by an array of short featurettes focusing on different aspects of the film -- the most interesting are the ones that focus on the film's Oscar-winning theme song, "The Morning After," and an intriguing look at the religious themes inherent to the film's storyline. The interviews are capped by a trio of short interview clips with Ronald Neame, who makes an entertaining and gracious interview subject. The promo material section of this disc includes trailers and an entertaining on-set featurette while the galleries area offers a comprehensive collection of stills, promotional pictures, and ad mats. There's even a screen-by-screen reproduction of an article on The Poseidon Adventure from American Cinematographer magazine, complete with clickable enlarged pictures. The packaging of the set is rounded out with a set of eight postcard-sized reproductions of stills from the film. All in all, this is a stellar special edition that offers tremendous value for the money and is simply a must for the film's fans.

The Poseidon Adventure was one of the first and best specimens of the disaster movie genre of the 1970s. The hallmarks of the genre are in full form: huge sets, a big budget, a star-studded ensemble cast, and a silly premise. Gene Hackman injects a renegade zeal into his role as the savior preacher; ironically, Hackman's other films during this era (The French Connection, Prime Cut) tended toward the violent and progressive. The action sequences involving the upside-down luxury liner are well-made, though, for many viewers, the primitive special effects make Poseidon a campy curiosity. Produced by Irwin Allen, the film was better received by audiences and critics than the original disaster flick, 1971's Airport. The Poseidon Adventure was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning for Best Song ("The Morning After") and an honorary award for visual effects.

    The most fun I have had watching a film yet!

    "The Poseidon Adventure" is a story about faith and irony. As well as love and hope, but what really makes this film special, is of course, it's stunt team, art direction and visual effects. Watching this film, you care about each character and their struggles. You mourn their deaths and become elated when they triumph huge odds. But, it IS a summer blockbuster and a great one. "The Poseidon Adventure" is the most fun you'll have at the movies!

    Brilliant but scary

    OMG!!! this movie was great but scary. Just the basic thought that one minute you're having a great fun time and the next you're either dead or fighting for your life.

    What a treat!

    God bless the 70's. Disaster mania. I remember going to the Queen Mary in '72 on New Year's Eve. What a night it was--sitting at a dining table with nine other people waiting at the stroke of midnight for our capsizing to start. Great movie!!!
