Overview

20th Century Fox finally does right and delivers to Region 1 customers what Europeans have been enjoying for quite some time before this -- the two-disc Predator: Collector's Edition DVD! Save for packaging and some clips about the Alien vs. Predator knock-down-drag-out flick (which the disc was undoubtedly released to promote), the content is an exact transfer from the Region 2 disc that some region-free savvy customers have already indulged in. For many though, this stuff is all new -- finally, a disc that lives up to the blockbuster film that spawned a series. Also released in the recommended widescreen edition, this disc comes with a full-screen image and both DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. The audio tracks have taken a bit of heat in the past for minor annoyances (directional gunfire is a bit off), while the dialogue can be a tad on the soft side, though for the most part, the mix works and delivers where the goods count. Disc one comes with the film and two commentary tracks -- one with director John McTiernan and the other, a text commentary from a film historian and most of the main crew. McTiernan isn't known to be the most engaging fellow on earth, though if you can get past his sullen mood, then there will be plenty to learn from this aging director as he looks back on his second feature. Disc two is packed with extras that every Predator fan will love, starting with the 30-minute "If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It" documentary. With interviews spanning almost the entire cast and crew, the grueling behind-the-scenes tales of the production are fleshed out in extreme detail -- from the catastrophe of the original monster costume (worn by none other by the "Muscles From Brussels" himself, Jean-Claude Van Damme!) to the sweltering heat and jungle infections, it's one heck of a tale and a nice documentary to boot. Seven featurettes are listed in the "Inside the Predator" menu, each ranging from tributes to Kevin Peter Hall (the big man inside the suit) to good old "Painless" -- Jesse Ventura's Gatling gun. With even more sections dedicated to the FX of the film (including some brief glimpses of the first suit -- Ouch!), one deleted and basically unneeded scene for you to chew on, some outtakes, and a flurry of galleries for you to enjoy, there's more than enough extra stuff on this disc to make it worthwhile. Add in the trailer, and you have one massive two-disc with enough on-set interviews and hidden Easter eggs to keep any film buff occupied for an entire afternoon.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Directed by a true master of heart-pumping action, John McTiernan, Predator is an entertaining marriage of action and science fiction. This is a honed-down action film without pretense. Thanks to some spine-tingling camera work, the deep rain forest setting comes alive. The innovative use of special effects make this film stand out from the average blood and guts action film. Using a point-of-view technique previously reserved for horror films, Predator gives the viewer a digitized stalking perspective of the ghastly Predator. One of Arnold Schwarznegger's best roles, the film lets him fly some of his patented one-liners, but for the most part he's restrained. The wily supporting cast includes such colorful characters as Bill Duke, Carl Weathers, and Jesse "The Body" Ventura. While not without its structural flaws, the film stands the test of time: a stylish unbridled action film that ranks extremely high in its genre.

One Of My All Time Favorites!

It's good to know that this movie has been released on blue ray already and not keep fans in suspense and wait a while down the road to finally convert it. This is without a doubt one of my favorite action/sci-fi movies of all time. As I am beginning to convert to high def, I am most particularly focusing on newer movies I don't have to upgrade to blue ray. However...there are several handfulls of particular action, epic, and sci fi titles...even a few comedies...that I really want to gradually upgrade to blue ray, this definitely being one of them! This is an epic, classic sci-fi/action movies...and is one of Schwarzenegger's best films in my opinion. This is certainly going to be one of my next upgrades, Terminator 2 having been the first one in this genre or of Arnold's that I chose to upgrade, seeing as how that's my favorite in that area...Predator being just underneath. There are many great sci-fi/action titles, but this, I'd have to say, is absolutely one of my all time favs. If you are a sci fi or action buff and have never seen the original Predator...there's something wrong with that. Get er done! No other Predator movie has quite measured up to this one, though I am anxious to see Predators when it releases soon. That one looks to be pretty awesome, though I still doubt it will measure up to the original. Scope this movie out if you haven't folks! Awesome flick!

    One Of My Absolute Favorites!

When it comes down to sci-fi/action movies, this is simply one of the all time best there is...and is one of my all time favorites in the genre, and of Schwarzenegger's as well...Terminator 2 being my first favorite. It's hard to describe just how bad@$$ this movie is. I'm glad to see that it has been released on blue ray, and not held off & keeping fans hanging before they finally convert it sometime down the road. If it was any of several movies that they converted right away, this was definitely one that was wise to do so with. As I gradually begin converting over to high def, I am focusing more on just newer movies or ones that I don't already have on DVD, but there are certain exceptions...certain favorite titles that I gradually want to upgrade that are definitely blue ray worthy, and this is one of those titles. Now that I have looked and know for sure that there is a blue ray edition, (I originally wrote a review on the blue ray edition, but its glitched and wouldn't submit my review), it is most certainly going to be one of my next blue ray purchases. Predator 2 and the Alien vs. Predator movies never even came close to comparing to this one, though I am very curious to see Predators that is coming out very soon, because it looks like it might possibly come close, though I'm pretty confident it still won't quite compare. If you are a sci fi and action fan and have never seen the original predator, than that's a straight up Greek tragedy. Epic fail! If you fall into this category, than I suggest you see this movie very soon. As for the rest of you sci-fi/action geeks out there who are cool and have seen this, cheers! I am sure most of you, like me, unless you already have, will be upgrading this to blue ray as well...just as soon as you're ready & set up to do so. I, for one, will be doing so very soon!

    One of Arnold's best

This was such a cool movie it's hard to come up with a word for it, Spectacular, awesome, classic, all of these fit the movie's description. Dutch (Arnold) was assigned to carry out a rescue mission with a group of professionals. What they end up doing is trying to survive a creature who is killing the team members one by one. A great movie, one every action fan should own.

    Awesome

I hope people just don't start reviewing this movie because of the new cop out release Alien v Predator. This was the best action movie 17 years ago and is still up there with the best today. The gungho dialogue is a crackup and fits in perfect with the action. The support cast is great and it's one of those movies you can watch time and time again. Action movies no way cut it like this one. So for all of you that played predator with your toys 17 years ago 'how good is this movie', for those who still haven't seen it and will watch it (due to this 2004 butchering of two classics), sit back and watch one of the best action movies of it's time!! One liners a plenty! I aint got time to bleed

BEST MOVIE EVER MADE... BEST PICTURE FOR AVP???

well right now im on AIM getting mad at all my friends who havent seen predator. i also just saw alien for the first time, so dont yell at me. but seriously, this is quite possibly the epitemy of expert moviemaking, acting, and writing. Predator is also the epitemy of all antagonists ever devised by the feeble, human mind of a director. BUY THIS MOVIE. DONT ASK QUESTIONS, JUST BUY.

'I ain't got time to bleed!'

One of Arnold's best films outside of Conan and Terminator. Also a great action star line-up with Jesse Ventura and Carl Weathers. The characters are GI-Joe action figure stereotypes but the script and action sequences make them believable and entertaining. Even with the mystery of the predator being gone, I still get thrills every time I see this movie: not to mention laughs at the humorous dialogue; 'I'm gonna have me some fun! I'm gonna have me some fun!' The special effects are still great after all of this time and the music really carries on the suspense. Altogether one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made! I've watched this movie a hundred times and I still enjoy it.

    one of the greatest

Many times Arnold finds himself the target of movie scrutiny. However, this is one time Arnold will always get the last laugh. This is one of the greatest movies of all time. This movie has it all, including besides Terminator and Conan Arnold's best work. The casting and acting is tremendous. The plot is still being duplicated to this day. This is just one helluva movie
