Overview

Jane Austen's perennially popular story of the game of love among the British upper classes returns to the screen in this polished film adaptation. The Bennets Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland are the parents of five daughters near the close of the 18th century. Comfortable within their means but well short of rich, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are looking for suitable husbands for their girls, and they are encouraged to learn that an eligible young bachelor from a wealthy family, Charles Bingley Simon Woods, has moved into a nearby estate. Eager to see if a match can be made, the Bennets bring their daughters Elizabeth Keira Knightley and Jane Rosamund Pike to a ball thrown by their new neighbor to see if sparks will fly. Jane seems to like Charles, and he appears to feel the same, but Elizabeth takes an immediate dislike to Darcy Matthew MacFadyen, Charles' egocentric best friend. While Elizabeth is infatuated with military man Lt. Wickham Rupert Friend and finds herself courted by William Collins Tom Hollander, a well-meaning but drab man of the cloth, fate causes Elizabeth and Darcy to frequently cross paths, and while they don't care for one another, they can't stop thinking about each other, either. Pride & Prejudice also stars Jena Malone, Judi Dench, and Penelope Wilton. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Jane Austen's much-beloved novel about five sisters in Georgian England has been adapted to the screen numerous times, both officially and unofficially, but never with quite a much verve as this version from director Joe Wright. The lion's share of that verve can be attributed to the performance of Keira Knightley, whose energetic portrayal of feisty, independent Elizabeth Bennet is a delight from first frame to last. She's the second-oldest sibling, much different than her sisters and, according to her mother, probably the least likely to attract a suitor. There seems to be something between Elizabeth and a stolid fellow named Darcy Matthew MacFadyen, but it's certainly not love -- she claims at one point that she will "loathe him for all eternity." But that's before events take a surprising turn and the taciturn young man ingratiates himself with the family. Due to its fairly large contingent of characters, Pride & Prejudice boasts an unusual array of plot complications, but Wright, working from an unusually cogent adaptation by screenwriter Deborah Moggach, effortlessly glides over the story's rough patches and keeps his storyteller's eye trained at all times on Elizabeth, around whose intoxicating personality much of the intrigue revolves. From both visual and technical standpoints, there's nary a flaw in this well-produced period romance, and with the radiant Knightley appearing in a character that plays to her strengths as a performer -- the conveyance of passion, determination, and generosity of spirit -- this Pride & Prejudice becomes a joyous viewing experience.

    Pride & Prejudice

Excellent rendition of Austin's book. The music alone is spectacular. Knightley and MacFadyen have amazing chemistry. This movie has moved to the top of my all time favorites.

    Pretty good

The movie was very good and I've also read the novel by Jane Austen. The character Kiera Knightlry played, though, was a little harsher than the character in Jane Austen's novel. Other than that, the movie is great.

Pride and Prejudice is a must see for any Jane Austin fan

I fell in love with this movie after I watched it. The actors are wonderful in their roles and the storyline will grab you and not let go until the end. I have watched this movie so much that I know almost every line. This movie is a true classic.

    I Also Recommend:

Simply THE most romantic movie made, EVAR

I went to this film alone (no one to heckle me for getting sucked into the romance) and in the mood for escapism, at 7PM. I went back and saw the 10PM show the same day. Ultimately I saw it four times in the theater.

Either you like this genre, or you don't; you love Jane Austen, or you don't. I do. And I don't hold the good people who put her stories up on the big screen to any particular standard. I really like the Greer Garson version, I like the BBC series. This movie is something else. It's not quite a reinterpretation, but it does add another dimension to the story. That isn't a problem for me -- it's a different medium; I didn't go to the movie to have someone read the book for me. The characters in this movie do not all have perfect hair, are not perfectly beautiful, look like they occasionally get B.O. But you like them. Alot.

The film resonated with me for days and days; I bought the soundtrack, I re-read the book again (not for the first time).

Don't be put off by Matthew McFaydden's sterness in the beginning; it's deliberate and by the end of the film I believe that you will agree he was absolutely perfect in the role. It must be hard play that character for people who in large part already know how the story turns out. But he convinced me to hate him like Elizabeth does at the beginning, and to love him like she did at the end.

    This Darcy Grows on You

The first time I saw this movie, I really didn't like Matthew MacFadyen as Mr. Darcy. Visions of Colin Firth danced in my head. But after another read of the book, and seeing this movie a couple more times, MacFadyen's performance actually surpasses Firth's in my opinion. He is actually sexier than Firth, a kind of smoldering passion can be seen in his eyes. Reading the book again, clearly it isn't so much that Elizabeth gets to know the "real" Mr. Darcy, as it is that Darcy himself changes. We really see that change when Elizabeth encounters him at Pemberly. MacFayden shows more vulnerability and deeper passion than Firth did. And Keira Knightley can express so much of what is going on in Elizabeth's mind with the slightest turn of her mouth, or a glance. Yes, the pacing is faster than the 6-hour A&E production, but I didn't find it lacking depth. Plus the cinematography, costumes, and staging make for a more beautiful viewing. Give it a try!

bought movie and read book from library

This has become one of my most favorite movies. The actors portraying Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are phenomenal. I so love the ending of the movie much better than the book, which is a switch. Usually the book is so much better but in this case for me that was not true. This adaptation is Academy Award worthy. It is so emotional and moving. If you need a good cry just watch Darcy's first proposal. To die for.

Classic storyline, unforgettable performances, Kiera Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen are perfect as Elizabeth and Darcy. A humorously romantic classic with gorgeous backdrops and perfect cast of characters that brings this classic to a new generation

Love the story, loved this version Keira and Matthew are perfect as the lead performers and the whole cast is perfect in protraying this classic by Jane Austen with a new updated version.

    Jane Austen is brilliant!

I fell in love with the book first. I was really pleasantly surprised how like the book the movie was. I despise movies that stray too far from the book. This P&P is phenomenal, and so true to Austen's vision. Now, that being said, Keira Knightley is a great actress as we all know. Matthew MacFadyen, too, is a wonderful actor as well as so very easy on the eyes. =) I think the casting was brilliant. A must see for Austenites!

    What was so different?

Cannot compare the both version 1995 and the 2005. Read Jane Austen book the 1995 played to her book but the 2005 was and updated version of love and surprises in love. I love the actor Mr Colin Firth as an esteem actor (example movie he was in What a Girl Wants and others) but the book and its pictures played more to the 1995 Pride and Prejudice. The 2005 played more to the rugged Mr Darcy aka Matthew Macfadyen and showed he was more sensivity in trying to avoid love and his unknown passion for Lizzy. True in the book and pictures of the 1995 version things were stuffy and Elizabeth was to be not handsome like her sister Jane Bennett but (Keira Knightly) played her well. The Director and Writers should have emphised more on detail in the relationship but it was 2 different versions and 10 years. If you could get the old book I am reading and have enjoyed by Ms Jane Austen you will under stand what I am trying to project. The Book contains 12 colored illustrations by C.E. and H.M. Brocks The Rittenhouse Classics Philadelphia. Macrae Smith Company Publishers and it is the 13th printing.

    Only watch once or twice

The first time I saw this, it was very good in my eyes. The music was lovely. The costumes were beautiful. And the story was the same breathtaking story I knew. However, as I watched it a second and a third and yet a fourth time, I started noticing some flaws that really bothered me... such as the lack of propriety or unseemly behaviour of some of the supposedly prim and proper characters. What also struck me as odd was that Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightly) never wore a hat! How strange and not very modest of her! I absolutely detest the ending: it is highly ridiculous and much too modern. I think they should have deleted that final scene in front of the lake. My favorite parts have to be the dancing scenes; I do think they are very pretty!
Watch this film once and you will have a very good impression of it as a whole.

I thought the movie wasn't bad but pretty good

I'll be honest I've never read a Jane Austen book but have heard of it them...A LOT and have seen some of its movies and thought this version of pride and prejudice was pretty good. This is same story like all the other adaptations that has to do with the main character of elizabeth bennett this time played by keira knightly and the trials she goes through with her on and off again relationship with the handsome Mr. Darcy played by the equally handsome Matthew Macfadyen. sorry can't spell the guy's last name. I thought Rosamind Pike as Jane Bennett did a cute performance especially with Simon Woods as Mr. Bingly. At first when I first saw Mr. Wickham I was like...isn't that Orlando Bloom? Rupert Friend was good too. Check this version out if you like Keira Knightly and or if you're into the romantic drama type movies. You decide. This is one of my favorite movies....with Keira in it. So remember there can be good movies too despite whether or not you hate the actor or actress, don't let that stop you from enjoying what could be an enjoyable movie.

    Well Done Adaptation

This film is a charming adaptation of Austen's novel, but the unwary (especially those who haven't had the immeasurable pleasure of reading the original) need to understand that it's just that: an adaptation. In the time available for a feature film it's impossible to be true to a novel so rich in characters and situations. The result is that much of the book is inevitably missing or drastically "condensed." The ending in the U.S. version is also not true to the original. In spite of this, people who aren't died-in-the-wool Austenites will love this film. It successfully captures the essential nature and spirit of the novel, and the performances are excellent. My main quibble is that the film makes the Bennet family seem more down-at-the- heels than they really are in the novel. The Bennets, as described by Jane Austen, weren't at the top of the economic ladder, but they were comfortably well off. The family's income was adequate for their lifestyle. The Bennets kept several servants, including a cook, and Mrs. Bennet took great pride in the table she kept, in contrast to the titled Lucases, whose daughters, we are given to understand, did the cooking in that family. Donald Sutherland's performance is very enjoyable, but in the novel one never senses that Mr. Bennett was lax in his grooming, constantly appearing unshaven and unkempt. For all of these reasons I still prefer the TV mini-series version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. It's more faithful to the book, and comes closer, I think, to capturing the lifestyles of the characters. Of course, as another reviewer has pointed out, it takes more than 5 hours to watch, but it's time very pleasurably spent and enhanced by a delightful musical sound track! Less patient viewers will still be well rewarded with this feature film adaptation of perhaps the best-loved of all English novels, and it's an excellent introduction to the endless pleasures to be found in Jane Austen's books!

    This is HORRIBLE

I cannot believe the positve reviews I have read here. I found about a thousand erros in this film from the first minute of watching it. It starts with Lizzy reading a book outside and she looks dressed more like a servant and not a Daughter of a Gentleman. Then the piano is in the dining room and the house looks like something a poverty stricken family lives in (and the Bennets are NOT that poor) I could go on an on about the mistakes made in this film, but I believe there is a limit on how much you can type on here. In conclusion dont bother watching this, buy the A&E series with Collin Firth. This is a great adaption to the book and the most accurate.

    Best Love Story Ever.

From the very first time, to the countless many times I've watched this movie, I find myself in utter amazement. I continue to fall in love with each... Mr. Darcy and Miss Lizzy even more, if that's possible. Under the circumstances in which they meet, to the discernment of falling in love with one another. The love possessed and shown in this wonderfully written movie/novel takes my breath away, as I always watch with anticipation to the beautiful ending. I feel good about myself and about true love in life. If I could watch Pride & Prejudice once a day, for the rest of my life, I would still feel the love between these two characters daily. Wanting nothing more than for them to be together, as they are, sharing their lives, happily ever after. I cannot help but cry, for the love I feel is projected, is a real love, that was meant to be. This is absolutely the best movie/novel I've ever read or had the pleasure to watch on DVD. Thanks to Jane Austen's brilliance, I will always hold this movie/novel precious to my heart. Unconditionial love is not something in life most never get to experience, ever. It's rare and comes around too little for all. This movie and novel is a pure Masterpiece. Genius work.

movie is as awful as the book is great

My friend turned to me and said, "I think Jane Austen has climbed out of her grave and is heading toward this movie theater."

Watch the Colin Firth BBC tv series instead. Now THAT one is worth seeing.
