Overview

Based on author Bryan Burrough's ambitious tome Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43, director Michael Mann's sprawling historical crime drama follows the efforts of top FBI agent Melvin Purvis Christian Bale in capturing notorious bank robber John Dillinger. A folk hero to the American public thanks to his penchant for robbing the banks that many people believed responsible for the Great Depression, charming bandit Dillinger Johnny Depp was virtually unstoppable at the height of his criminal career; no jail could hold him, and his exploits endeared him to the common people while making headlines across the country. J. Edgar Hoover's Billy Crudup FBI was just coming into formation, and what better way for the ambitious lawman to transform his fledgling Bureau of Investigation into a national police force than to capture the gang that always gets away? Determined to bust Dillinger and his crew, which also included sociopathic Baby Face Nelson Stephen Graham and Alvin Karpis Giovanni Ribisi, Hoover christened Dillinger the country's very first Public Enemy Number One, and unleashed Purvis to take them down by whatever means necessary. But Purvis underestimated Dillinger's ingenuity as a master criminal, and after embarking on a frantic series of chases and shoot-outs, the dashing agent humbly surmised that he was in over his head. Outwitted and outgunned, Purvis knew that his only hope for busting Dillinger's gang was to baptize a crew of Western ex-lawmen as official agents, and orchestrate a series of betrayals so cunning that even America's criminal mastermind wouldn't know what hit him. Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, and Stephen Dorff co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

    I Also Recommend:

    Great Film!

I am somewhat familiar with the story of John Dillinger & such, and as far as what I know, the movie seemed pretty accurate. The shoot out scenes were done well, and the acting was very good. Huge Johnny Depp fan...not very many movies of his I've seen that I didn't like, most especially his Tim Burton stuff. Overall, this was a great gangster flick. I highly recommend it if you are into such films.

    disappointing

I adore Johnny Depp's acting style and eagerly awaited the release of Public Enemies. Dillinger's history has always fascinated me and the opportunity to see Depp play this iconic gangster was a thrill I couldn't wait to see. Granted, the movie had great costuming, music, and appeared to be historically accurate. The acting is what led to my bad review. Depp was stellar, as always, but I felt the other actors were a bit stiff and unbelievable in their portrayals. The movie did hold a lot of promise, reaching but never quite touching that realm that would have made it stellar.

    Public Enemies

Very slow, lacking any form of personal role developement
Nicely filmed, good sets, good wardrobe, but totally empty.
Not a patch on Lawrence Tierney's "Dillinger"

    Manhattan Melodrama

I sat last night discussing this film with an old friend of mine who had just gotten around to seeing this movie. Both of us are born & raised New Englanders which probally accounts for his love of all things Godfather - Goodfella - Soprano, and also would account for my over-all distain for this same material. I have had 50 years of hearing too much of the actual horrors that Hollywood has turned into "cool sh*t". Though I did enjoy The Departed, The Boondock Saints & even the russian Eastern Promises....I guess maybe "Sinn Fein" works better for me these days than "Cosa Nostra".

Anyway, this movie really clicks on all cylinders. The attempted accuracy was much appreciated. Visually it was very well done...watch for "Baby" Face Nelson's (literal) last breath. The audio was on par with "Private Ryan" and should really give the viewer a much more accurate & thunderous appreciation for just how far early law enforcement had to come to do battle against the Thompson's and BAR's that these bank robbers brought to the "dance".

Mr. Depp again proved his incredible acting versatility. Long ago he has proven his ability to pull off "gonzo", it was nice to see him settle back into something like this and excell just as well. Christian Bale was solid as his "enemy" Melvin Purvis, and ironically both my friend and I agreed that the most intersting and powerful performance was displayed by someone who wasn't around all that much, and when they were didn't have all that much to say....the Texas Ranger (who talks with the girlfriend at the end).

So, if you have grown up on the east coast, maybe the north east coast, maybe near a city like Boston or Providence, maybe had your fill of "families" like the Patriaca's, then grab this flick and settle in for some mid-western early American crime history.

I would also highly recommend Bonnie & Clyde, The Untouchables, and Road to Perdition....and maybe even The Shawshank Redemption...a little different, but truly an excellant picture of another side of crime during the depression. Enjoy!

    I Also Recommend:

Flash! Dillinger and Nelson rob again.

It is a retelling of a familiar piece of American lore. Set in the economic stagnance of the Great Depression, "Public Enemies" delivers a new look and feel to a decades old story of bank robbers and the lawmen who pursued them. This Michael Mann directed film is led by the completely convincing performance of Johnny Depp as John Dillinger. This version of the Dillinger story is as close to the real events as one can get in the confines of a two-hour motion picture. There is also a subdued quality to this film that makes it seem as though they are the real events unfolding. The dialogue is softer and the lighting is much more natural than you may be accustomed. And that is exactly how this subtle picture sneaks up on you while you watch. What it is not, and impressively so, is the kitchy gangster movies of old, replete with snappy, machine gun-like banter and more comedy than content. If you think that you need such as movie, I'll recommend that you look into "Johnny Dangerously," which is an excellent example of a 1930's parody film. "Public Enemies" is ten strides beyond the cliche' gangster flick. This is a stylish movie without being overtly slick like "The Untouchables," which was a great actors-type film, but the parts were larger-than-life at times. "Public Enemies" boasts of less-is-more acting styles and photography that lure us in like watching Barbara Walters do a one-on-one interview: It's all very subtle and then you're hooked. So was I. Well done, folks.
