Pumpkin

Overview

Small films with a complete lack of focus don't often do well at the box office. Such is the case with Pumpkin, starring Christina Ricci. Will the movie find a larger audience on home video? That is questionable here. For the DVD, image quality is quite good, though not excellent. Included are both 1.85:1 (which is anamorphic) and full frame transfers, which do show signs of grain now and then, harming an overall impressive picture. For the most part colors are accurately reproduced and skin tones are right on ...

For the most part colors are accurately reproduced and skin tones are right on target. The sound, a 5.1 Dolby Digital track is nothing to get excited about as all sound is centered up front. Surrounds are never utilized but little can really be expected for an independent film of this nature. Is the critical drubbing of this film the reason MGM only gave the disc a theatrical trailer for supplemental features? Other films disliked as much received more extras, but that is obviously not the case with all titles, as this one is certainly evident. Ultimately this disc is as insignificant as the characters within.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
There may have been no advisable way to market Pumpkin, other than how they did: an outré assault on good taste in the spirit of the Farrelly Brothers, starring Christina Ricci, the youth queen of sarcasm. After all, who would believe -- or pay to see -- a mostly straightforward look at a privileged college girl falling for her mentally retarded charity case? Black comedy is probably the right category for Pumpkin, but its subversive agenda loses steam midway through, resulting in a more conventional romantic drama using unconventional parts. Still, it offers its characters a fairer shake than they get in most sorority movies full of caricatures and pre-established satirical norms. Tony R. Abrams and Adam Larson Broder have succeeded in more ways than they've failed in their directorial debut, but their earnest attempt to supply stock characters with sympathetic dimension can seem naïve. Ricci's character is better when obliviously trampling on emotions, as when she sets up a blind date between Pumpkin and an overweight girl in her poetry class, trying to link up their lost souls. Achieving genuine empathy is her destiny, but it deprives Broder's script of some of its prior bite. On the other hand, making fun of all the characters would have been an easier, more certain route, so the rookie filmmakers can't be blamed for taking risks that don't pan out. If Pumpkin is ultimately unconvincing, it's because the subject matter has so much built-in implausibility, not because it was mishandled.
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert
1/2
Pumpkin is alive, and takes chances, and uses the wicked blade of satire in order to show up the complacent political correctness of other movies in its campus genre. It refuses to play it safe.

    WHAT?!!

What?! I feel like I saw a completely diffrent movie than the rest of the review writers. I did not laugh once the entire movie, and suprize ending?! It was extremely predictable. This movie was more stereo-typical and ignorant than any I've seen. I was very offended and disappointed.

Sorry I didn't see it sooner!

I just finished watching the movie, and I'm sorry that I didn't see it sooner! It is a funny yet touching movie, and the soundtrack is excellent as well. The characters are likeable, and you truly feel their pain throughout the movie. The ending will surprise you, but it definitely feels right.

    That movie was SOMETHING!

Let's say I was impressed by it - by the concept and the way it was made. I was surprised by the end, because i didnt actually expect that it will go beyond the usual scenario where everything comes back to the ''right'' position. That was a nice surprise.

Can We Say....Nice Choice Of Film For Christina!!!

I really enjoyed this movie. I woke up this morning at 8 and ended up missing my first class because I could just not turn away from it, it was a GREAT start to my long day. This story has a great ending and a great moral to it. Anyone with a compassion for people and life should see this movie!!

    Whose handicapped?

This movie stirred up a great deal of anger inside me towards people who lack the ability to love and accept everyone, and who only see the tin can, not the hearty soup inside. Christina did a great job in this film and it definitely touched my heart.

    Pumpkin Is Sweet

Christina Ricci is very good in this film. She reminded me of Reese Witherspoon's character from ''Legally Blonde'' minus the common sense. The characters that surround Ricci and her love interest are vile- especially her sorority sisters (remember the mean girls in ''Carrie''). A good film that will make you think about appearances and how much they matter to some people.
