ALSO INCLUDES THESE SHORTS BY JIRI TRNKA: STORY OF THE BASS CELLO Chekhov's story about a bass player whose clothes are stolen while he's bathing in a river. THE SONG OF THE PRAIRIE A parody of the wild American West, where the pistol rules the roost, timidity has no place, and love blossoms at first sight. THE MERRY CIRCUS Neither a puppet film nor a cartoon, but a entirely unique means of expression and technique. This innovative short film was created by using paper cut-outs and stop-action photography. A DROP TOO MUCH The tragic tale of a motorcyclist who, happily on his way to meet his fiancée, stops at a tavern with disastrous consequences. THE HAND This was Trnka's last, and some say greatest, film. An Artisy, happy in his life, devotes his time to making a pot for his favorite flower. but a giant hand appears and orders him to create a statue of a hand instead. JIRI TRNKA: PUPPET ANIMATION MASTER This brief documentary offers a glimpse of Trnka's genius. It includes clips of him working on his puppets and excerps from such films as Grandpa Planted a Beet, The Czech Year, Prince Bayaya and The Good Soldier Schweik."

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Amy Robinson
This dazzling collection of innovative puppet films provides an indispensable introduction to the work of Czech animator Jiri Trnka. The master "puppeteer" uses stop-motion photography to animate finely detailed wooden dolls, and this technique, combined with his own artistry, creates an undeniably unique style. A surprisingly effective educational short, "A Drop Too Much," tells the cautionary tale of a drunken motorcyclist with nightmarish, surreal imagery. "The Hand," an indictment of totalitarian rule that was censored in Trnka's home land, portrays a poor but contented sculptor whose life is interrupted by the repeated visits of a giant, disembodied hand. And the lyrical, feature-length The Emperor's Nightmare retells the classic fairy tale about the desire for freedom. In a departure from his typical puppet animation, Trnka uses elaborate paper cutouts to depict the fanciful performances in The Merry Circus. The best of these films resonate with a yearning for human connection and individual expression that makes them as emotionally satisfying as they are entertaining.
