Britton and his gang notice that Sheriff Forrest bears a striking resemblance to the famous gunfighter Wild Bill Hickock, who died some years ago. Elsewhere in Refuge, Britton's gang meets dead ringers for such late, great outlaws as Doc Holliday Randy Quaid, Billy the Kid Donnie Wahlberg, and Jesse James J.D. Souther. Britton learns that Refuge is actually Purgatory, where the gunfighters are stranded between Heaven and Hell, hoping to hoping to find a redemptive grace that will bring them salvation as they struggle not to backslide into final damnation. Soon Britton's gang becomes restless, and the men of Refuge may have to return to their guns if they are to protect the town. Produced for the TNT cable network, Purgatory also features Peter Stormare, Brad Rowe, and Richard Edson. The film is also available on home video in a Spanish subtitled edition.

    A Western with a Different Twist

    My family and I find that we never seem to tire of this movie. It is an interesting twist on the western movie and is a very satisfying allegory. It is best viewed for the first time without any prior knowledge of the storyline so that the viewer can put the pieces together along with the characters as the story unfolds. Even after the plot is revealed, it can be appreciated time and again for the unusual and interesting way the message/story is presented.

    A lesson in Symbolism

    This film is one that you see more and understand more each time you watch it. I first saw Purgatory in my Senior English class as an example of symbolism in movies. Plato's Allegory of the Cave, cleansing water, and many more are there if you look for the meanings. But don't worry action and Western fans, the movie still lives up to its gun-slinging roots. After all, if it can entertain 17 yr olds in a classroom setting, it's even better on your own home TV!
