Quai des Orfèvres

Overview

Henri-Georges Clouzot's Quai des Orfèvres arrives on DVD with the kind of treatment that few post-World War II French films ever get. From the opening credits -- a shot of a shaft of light pouring through smoke in a jail cell -- the full-frame image (1.33:1) looks as good as any well-preserved American movie of the era from a major studio, with some visual details so clean and sharp that they almost glitter. There's obviously been a lot of restoration work done on this movie, including the newly translated ...

There's obviously been a lot of restoration work done on this movie, including the newly translated subtitles. The audio is also remarkably crisp -- a brace of defects having been corrected and eliminated in the process -- and the soundtrack is a special treat here, the dialogue and everything else possessing real presence, like a new recording. Additionally, the movie has a lush score, as well as several key songs and musical numbers that are important to the plot. Quai des Orfèvres is one of the finest crime thrillers of the postwar period in any language, and there's plenty here for movie buffs of several different sorts to enjoy. Along with the movie come a brace of extras: an original French trailer running over three minutes, which, itself, looks better than many complete movies of the same vintage; a set of posters used to market the movie internationally; and, best of all, an extended series of interviews with Clouzot and the surviving key cast members from a 1971 television special, in which they discuss the film and the director's way of working. The special cuts freely between the actors and Clouzot and the movie to illustrate or amplify (or dispute) points. Besides giving a lot of good information, it also shows how delectable Suzy Delair still looked in 1971, some 24 years after the movie was made. Strangest and most informative of all is the point where Clouzot explains how he came to license and then almost totally throw away the source novel by Stanislas-André Steeman. The bonus materials are all easily accessible on a two-layer menu that is very simple and easy to use.
