Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
After five years on the air as one of television's most groundbreaking cable dramas, Queer as Folk comes to the end of its run on the Showtime cable network. Based on the identically titled British hit, the Americanized version of Folk followed the lives and loves of several gay friends in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This being a pay-cable network, it followed those lives and loves in often stark, steamy detail. Season 5 brings closure to the friends on Liberty Avenue in a year that satisfyingly winds up several story lines. Ted (Scott Lowell) faces the prospect of growing older in the gay community and trying to look attractive by undergoing cosmetic surgery, until he realizes that true love is a lot closer than he thinks. Melanie (Michelle Clunie) and Lindsay (Thea Gill) face marital troubles over the course of the season but eventually reunite and decide to move to Canada, where they can raise their two children without the prejudices they face in the U.S. Emmett (Peter Paige) gets a new job in front of the TV cameras. Debbie (Sharon Gless) makes a decision to retire, until the new person she hires, Loretta (Rosie O'Donnell), makes her see that all play and no work makes Deb bored. Ben (Robert Gant) tries to bond with distant son Hunter (Harris Allan) with the help of his partner, Michael (Hal Sparks). Michael, meanwhile, works on his comic book and spearheads the campaign against Proposition 14, a legislative move meant to outlaw gay marriage and prevent homosexuals from adopting. And finally, the series-long romance between playboy Brian (Gale Harold) and artist Justin (Randy Harrison) reaches its pinnacle with a marriage proposal.

The final season of Queer as Folk was just as good as the others. It had humor, sadness, shame, guilt, and emotional turbulance just like the other seasons. I am sad to say that the series is over. It was an excellent way to spend my weekends catching up on old episodes of Queer as folk. The cast did a fantastic JOB!! I will miss it terribly, but glad I have the series to conitnue watching over and over again.

Over the last 2 or 3 weeks I've seen season 1-5. Especially fascinating was the last season, where Brian mellows and wants to settle down. Though I don't think the ending is satisfying, I for my part would like to know what happened to all of them.
