Overview

Directed by Garry Marshall, Raising Helen revolves around Helen Harris Kate Hudson, whose successful fashion career and decadent Manhattan lifestyle are plenty in terms of keeping her occupied and content. Helen's days as a socialite are brought to a swift end, however, when she is informed not only of the death of her sister and brother-in-law, but of the decision to leave their three children in her care. Being one of New York's hippest matters little to 15-year-old Audrey Hayden Panettiere, ten-year-old Henry Spencer Breslin, and five-year-old Sarah Abigail Breslin, who would much rather have their parents back. Convinced she can raise the kids and maintain her already fast-paced schedule, Helen quickly finds herself burnt out and disheartened by her older sister's Joan Cusack lack of faith. Despite her already hectic schedule, however, Helen finds the time to develop a genuine affection for her new dependents, as well as an equally genuine attraction to Pastor Don Parker John Corbett, the kids' school principal and local pastor. Eventually, Helen realizes she can't balance the two lives, and is faced with a difficult decision: Does she live her old dreams or take a chance on a new one? ~ Tracie Cooper

Editorial Reviews

Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman
Hudson's sunny, ringlet-tossing appeal fits snugly into the film's happy-homemaker ideology: She makes caring for three kids she barely knows look downright glamorous.
Miami Herald - Peter Debruge
There's an old-school innocence to Marshall's style, and it's satisfying to be whisked away from reality to this parallel universe where we find it possible to laugh amid such a fundamentally tragic scenario.

Kate Hudson shines as Helen Harris

Raising Helen is a movie that I stumbled across when channel surfing the starz channels. Once I began watching the movie, I became addicted to it. I think Raising Helen has a positive message about stay at home moms. Much of society looks down upon women who stay at home to look after their children because the women are not running "successful" careers. However, this movie shows being a stay at home mom is quite a fulltime job, but it is a rewarding job at the same time. Helen Harris thought her modeling job was so important to her because but then she realized the children she was entrusted to was even more important so she gave up her wonderful career to become a mother. Helen is the model for today's women because she expresses the same emotion as mothers do sometimes but yet picks herself up and presses on. I think this movie is great-even if you do not agree with my point of view, one should still watch Raising Helen as it will make you laugh and cry.

When good actors pick a bad script

I want my money back. This movie was just a big waste of time; too long and not funny at all. The critics were right, don't waste your money!
