Overview

Thia opulently packaged four-DVD set assembles three very familiar staples of the Frank Sinatra/Rat Pack film library and a fourth movie -- Sergeants Three (1962) -- that hasn't been seen, even on television, in several decades. Three of the four have been loaded up with bonus features, and the presentations -- like the movies themselves -- are of widely varying quality.

And the set also comes with a ton of paraphernalia associated with the films and the Rat Pack which, in fact, comprise most of the bulk of the packaging. The centerpiece of the set should be Lewis Milestone's Ocean's Eleven (1960), which comes with the lion's share of the extras in addition to a crisp, letterboxed (2.35-to-1) film-to-video transfer and good, loud sound. The three-dozen chapters are perfect for a movie like this, with enough plot points and twists to demand it; and there's a lively commentary by Frank Sinatra Jr., who ranges across the history of the production, the development of the script, and the personalities involved. He's fun to listen to here, though not as much fun as the movie, which, in fairness, would be hard to equal in that department. There's also a Tonight Show clip from the late 1970's in which Frank Sinatra and Angie Dickinson reminisce about the movie and each other, plus two trailers, an on-screen map of Las Vegas (where the movie was, of course, filmed and set), and accounts of the cast and crew. This disc would make a solid free-standing release on its own, though it is only enhanced by the presence of Gordon Douglas's Robin & The Seven Hoods (1964), a lesser but enjoyable caper-romp with music that teamed Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. et al, and Bing Crosby. Sinatra Jr.'s commentary track for this film is a bit less focused, though it does add somewhat to the viewing experience, and the letterboxed (2.35-to-1) image is bright and crisp enough to justify a fresh look at this somewhat underrated picture (which, though a musical, is stolen throughout by non-musically talented Peter Falk). Four For Texas (1963), by contrast, is the weakest of the movies here, which doesn't mean that it isn't worth seeing -- only that there's little exceptional about it beyond being an entertaining comedy western; James Garner would accomplish a good deal more with Support Your Local Sheriff a few years later. But Sinatra, Martin et al look like they're having lots of fun, and the two female leads, Anita Ekberg and Ursula Andress, are good to look at. The transfer is good and it comes with a trailer, but no commentary. And, finally, that brings us to John Sturges's Sergeants Three (1962), the western remake of Gunga Din starring Sinatra, Martin, Davis, and Joey Bishop. Out of distribution for at least 15 years, the movie isn't really much -- Sturges's forte (as one anyone who has seen The Hallelujah Trail can attest, was not comedy, or western comedy, and the movie tends to lie very flat when seen today, even when shown in itsw proper aspect ratio of 2.35-to-1 (the first time that's happened since the early 1960's). It just isn't that good a film, and why Frank Sinatra, Jr. did a commentary track on it -- even allowing for the fact that he was employed on the picture as a gof-er -- is a bit of a mystery. He doesn't really know enough about westerns to do a proper talk on that level, and reveals his broader ignorance about movies in the first three minutes of speaking (Note to Frank Sinatra, Jr. and Warner Home Video's audio editing department: John Sturges was NOT the son of Preston Sturges). Additionally, by the third of these commentaries, one tires of hearing him describe every bit player and supporting actor whom his father knew or worked with as "great" -- a "great" character actor, a "great" stuntman, a "great" editor etc. And he spends too much time revelling over some very pedestrian sight gags and humor, essentially telling us what we're seeing on the screen. For this supplement, the younger Sinatra might just as well have stayed home. The picture has been given fewer than half of the number of chapters accorded the other movies in this set, and overall just comes off as second-rate, in the treatment as well as the original execution. Each disc opens automatically to an easy-to-access menu, multi-layered in the case of Oceans's Eleven and dual-layered in the case of the others. The additional bonus materials consist of various paraphernalia -- Rat Pack playing cards and various stills and related visual artifacts of the movie, which come in two separate packages within the larger slipcase for this set. The whole collection isn't too serious, like the movies themselves, and works well in this context -- one couldn't image None But The Brave or The Manchurian Candidate being presented in to cheerful and lighthearted a manner. The slipcased packaging makes the whole combination look more substantial than it actually is, and Sinatra (and Dean Martin) fans and collectors will have to own it.
