Overview

Three early features from legendary special effects artist and stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen are packaged together in this box set from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Featuring three black-and-white sci-fi pictures that Harryhausen and producer Charles H. Schneer made before moving into such full-color fantasy epics as The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and Jason and the Argonauts, this set includes It Came From Beneath the Sea, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, and 20 Million Miles to Earth. All three films have been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and have also been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors; 20 Million Miles to Earth also includes a pan-and-scan transfer in the full-screen ratio of 1.33:1. All three films look excellent, with the images sharp, clear, and rich, and plenty of chapter stops included. The audio for all three films is in English, and has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono (while It Came From Beneath the Sea includes a disclaimer title card regarding the content of the commentary track, no such track appears on the disc). 20 Million Miles to Earth includes optional subtitles in English and French, while the other two films have optional subtitles in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Thai, and Chinese. All three discs include the same two bonus documentaries, The Harryhausen Chronicles (a fine hour-long look at Harryhausen's career, featuring extensive interview footage with him and a look at his animation models and production sketches) and This Is Dynamation (a circa 1958 promotional reel which trumpeted the effects magic of the upcoming The 7th Voyage of Sinbad). 20 Million Miles to Earth also includes the film's original trailer, as well as a trailer for The Three Worlds of Gulliver. Earth vs. the Flying Saucers adds on an entertaining interview in which Harryhausen chats with Joe Dante about making the movie, and trailers for Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, First Men in the Moon, and The Three Worlds of Gulliver. Also, It Came From Beneath the Sea tacks on trailers for It Came From Beneath the Sea, Mysterious Island, 20 Million Miles to Earth, and one non-Harryhausen picture, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The set is also packaged with a handsome 44-page perfect-bound booklet featuring excerpts from Harryhausen's book An Animated Life, including plenty of behind-the-scenes photos and production drawings and a forward from friend and colleague Ray Bradbury. While the choice of the three films included in The Ray Harryhausen Gift Set is a bit puzzling, as they hardly represent Harryhausen at his best or most ambitious, all three films are shown to their best advantage, and anyone with a taste for 1950s sci-fi will delight in this package.
