Overview

Originally produced and aired during the summer of 2006 on The Disney Channel, the gentle, family-friendly teen comedy Read It and Weep constitutes an adaptation of Julia DeVillers' popular 2004 young-adult novel How My Journal Became a Bestseller. The film revolves around Jamie Kay Panabaker, a pretty and intelligent high-school freshman, but also a complete wallflower who spends the majority of her time daydreaming and scribbling in her personal journal, and whose chances of entering the popular cliques are slim at best. Jamie carries a secret weapon, however: a brash and sharp-tongued alter ego named Isabella, or "Is" played by Kay Panabaker's twin sister, Danielle Panabaker, who parades through the halls and classrooms of her high school with not an iota of self-doubt in her mind, and who manages, in no time flat, to throw her enemies into detention and win the devotion of the most popular boy in her school. Then, one day, Jamie's life turns a corner when, in an attempt to meet a class deadline, she accidentally turns in her private journal instead of a composition assignment -- and her teacher promptly turns it into a best-seller. Alexandra Krosney, Marquise C. Brown, Jason Dolley, and Nick Whitaker co-star; Patrick J. Clifton and Beth Rigazio co-wrote the adaptation.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
Read It and Weep is an amiable little Disney Channel movie that its target audience -- female tweeners -- will likely find irresistible. Adults may be a bit more resistant to its charms and cognizant of its flaws, but even so they will likely find Read It a fairly agreeable way to pass the time with their kids. The film is filled with the "not-quite-the-real-world" school milieu that is typical of Disney TV films, in which the setting is squeaky-clean and the social hierarchy is regimentally defined on the surface but a bit more porous underneath than seems logical. It's both real enough and fake enough that young viewers can identify with it and still accept some of the more ridiculous plot and character twists (something their parents may have a bit harder time doing). Credibility issues aside, the screenplay works itself out in a pleasing fashion and the whole film percolates along at a nice pace. If it abandons some interesting but potentially disturbing possibilities that it raises (such as, what does it really mean that Jamie is becoming so influenced by Is?), that's probably exactly what its audience wants. Besides, Read It is blessed with a fine cast of young talent. Kay Panabaker is winning and believable as Jamie, Dana Panabaker has just the right edge as Is, Allison Scagliotti has the teen-meanie routine down pat and Jason Dolley is appealingly sensitive as Connor. They and the rest of the players should help adults get over some of Read It's rough spots.
